The GWS Sustainment Engineering team is seeking a highly skilled Systems Sustainment Engineer (Level 5) to support the resolution of operational issues across Global Missile Defense (GMD) sites and laboratories. The incumbent will act as the principal technical liaison between GWS and the field, develop long‑term remedial strategies, and present status and solutions to the GWS Mission‑Design Authority (MDA) and other senior stakeholders. This role demands deep expertise in both hardware and software domains, proven leadership in process improvement, and the ability to drive cross‑disciplinary teams toward mission‑critical outcomes.
Core Responsibilities:
Lead issue‑resolution cycles – own end‑to‑end troubleshooting of hardware, firmware, and software anomalies reported from GMD sites; provide on‑site support when required.
Develop and approve work instructions – author clear, executable procedures; review and certify peer‑generated instructions for safety and compliance.
Drive long‑term sustainment solutions – perform root‑cause analysis, propose design changes, and coordinate with product owners to implement fixes across the production baseline.
Technical communication – produce concise status briefs, post‑mortem reports, and presentation decks for senior leadership, the MDA, and DoD customers.
Process improvement – lead Kaizen/Lean initiatives to reduce mean‑time‑to‑repair (MTTR) and improve configuration‑management workflows.
Mentor junior engineers – provide guidance, code/review reviews, and training on system architecture, troubleshooting methodology, and documentation standards.
Collaborate with multi‑disciplinary teams – integrate inputs from Systems Engineering, I&T, Modeling & Simulation, HW/SW/FW development, and logistics (EBOM/IPL).
Toolset stewardship – maintain and enhance usage of SAP HANA, SAP Production, Jira, Tableau, and Microsoft Office suite within the sustainment environment.
Security & compliance – ensure all activities comply with DoD security policies, maintain Secret clearance, and safeguard classified information.
Travel support – attend on‑site events, corrective action workshops, and customer reviews at GMD installations.
Basic Qualifications:
A STEM B.S. degree in Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, or related STEM field and 12 years of relevant experience; M.S. degree and 10 years of relevant experience or or Ph.D. and 8 years of relevant experience
Active DoD Secret – U.S. citizen
Advanced expertise in SAP Production environment, Jira, MS Office
Independent resolution of high‑impact anomalies; authority to approve corrective actions
Prior leadership of sustainment or integration projects for weapon‑system platforms
Established track record of driving organization‑wide process change; mentorship in documentation standards

Primary Level Salary Range: $169,000.00 - $253,600.00The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
