Who We Are

Carnegie Robotics engineers high performance autonomy solutions as well as the sensors and software that power them.

We partner with industry leaders to provide customized robotic solutions for any problem. Our work is on display in industries including autonomous ground vehicles, autonomous and self-docking boats, logistics, industrial inspection, advanced digital cameras, precision GNSS-INS positioning, mining, ruggedized wearable computers, and minesweeping.

Whether you already have an interest in robotics, or are just joining the field and are looking to find your “niche”, Carnegie Robotics is the place for you.

Who We’re Looking For

Individuals with engineering experience in the areas we are passionate about and a desire to jump in and own solutions to autonomy’s exciting challenges.

This role is seeking an electrical, mechanical, or software engineer with 5+ years of experience and a demonstrated ability to guide the activities of multi-disciplinary teams as they mature system level solutions.

We’re about growth and providing opportunities for you as you move through your career.

What You’ll Be Doing

As a Systems Engineer, you will be collaborating with an energetic and motivated, multi-disciplinary team to develop reliable robotic and automation systems for a wide range of real-world commercial products and R&D applications. You will serve as interpreter of many languages: translating technical details to customers and expressing the customers’ needs to your technical team.  You will work alongside a Senior Program Manager to develop, document, and execute technical decision making needed to move a project from the concept phase, through prototype development, and into production.

This requires a unique skill set involving reconciling program requirements with current realities of each discipline's solution status.  You will document current capabilities, compare these to required performance and work with the team to mature the solution, execute test and evaluation activities, and document results.

What Your Day to Day Is

  • Interface with Senior Program Manager to understand and shape high-level team priorities, especially in regard to demonstrating and documenting contractual requirements and performance metrics
  • Coordinate with Product or Program teams of 4 to 6 electrical, mechanical, and software engineers to advance a project toward accomplishing technical, schedule, and budgetary goals
  • Generate and maintain schedule, testing, and documentation tracking tools to help the team prioritize tasks, perform technical trades, and make decisions based on performance impacts, technical risks, and cost implications
  • Document program requirements, test results, trade studies, and other technical information for consumption by the internal team, customer, government, or other regulatory bodies
  • Provide technical and programmatic insights and guidance based on comprehensive view of the program generated by performing the above functions

What You’ll Have

  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering
  • 5+ years of experience working on multi-disciplinary teams to develop electro-mechanical or autonomous systems
  • A builder/maker mindset
  • Excellence in a technical discipline and the desire for a more multi-disciplinary role on autonomy teams navigating the challenges of product development in the nascent world of robotics and autonomy
  • Teamworking experience with a strong sense of personal accountability and initiative
  • Ability to thrive in a fast paced environment with an expectation of some individual decision making
  • Technical skills relevant enough to the CRL product mix to anticipate risks, think critically about the technical path the team is on, and challenge and redirect as necessary
  • Experience defining/refining product requirements based on high level customer needs or operational concepts
  • Experience with the full product lifecycle (research, development, launch, manufacturing, and sustainment) in an organization whose business model is driven by the recurring sales of products
  • Exceptional written and presentation skills required to communicate to customers and team-mates

How You’ll Stand Out

  • Experience with autonomous vehicles, digital cameras, GNSS-INS systems, ruggedized electronics, computer vision, software algorithms, ML
  • Experience in a technical project management role
  • Understanding of different and overlapping regulations and legal requirements
  • Experience in defense-related government contracting
  • Experience with system-level requirements development, decomposition, and validation
  • Risk management experience including risk identification, analysis, and development of a risk response strategy
  • Experience with reliability testing and failure analysis: HALT, HASS, MTBF Analysis
  • Experience with system test plan and test report development, and test execution including: FAT, FQT, ESS which may include Random Vibration, Sine Vibration, and EMI/EMC testing

What You'll Get Out Of It

  • UPMC health coverage with FSA or HSA options
  • Comprehensive dental, vision, and life insurance
  • Fidelity 401(k) plan with employer match
  • Free catered lunch every day with a vegan option
  • 31 Days of PTO (including holidays)
  • Comp time for company travel
