For Airbus Defence & Space in Taufkirchen, we are looking for a  Systems Engineer - Military Satellite Communication Systems (d/f/m).

The department is developing satellite communication systems for civil and military customers and is the overall engineering authority for SATCOMBw. 

As a Systems Engineer - Military Satellite Communication Systems (d/f/m), you will work on the concept, design, development and technical requirements of system upgrades and modifications of the SATCOMBw Satellite Communication System and its related program upgrades for the German armed forces. You will be responsible for the alignment of the different system modifications and upgrades of the Systemverbund SATCOMBw and will work closely together with the Chief Engineers and Lead Systems Engineers of the major system upgrades of the space segment as well as of the ground and user intrastructure. You will also be responsible for the overall system performance including user segment. You will also be supervising the acceptance of major system upgrades to ensure meeting the overall system requirements.

During routine operations, we will be in charge of maintaining the system performance over lifetime and propose system improvements and necessary extensions and modifications to keep it state-of-the-art.

You will also be involved in system anomaly boards that might occur and will be the technical autority to support technical resolution of the issues.

Your tasks and responsibilities 

  • Requirements engineering with DOORS in the area of the satellite communication systems, space and ground segments as well as lower levels

  • Conduct and follow-up conceptual design activities in the area of satellite coms lead systems engineering, including but not limited to requirement, interface, user data and management data flow within the ground segment as well as TM/TC interfaces and interfaces to the customer

  • Establishment of requirement for satellite systems, space and ground segments and their items, e.g. modern digital payloads, ground stations, mission operation center, spacecraft control center, payload control center, networks incl. IT infrastructure as well as data centers

  • Analysis of end-to-end communications performance incl. user segment over digital as well as transparent payloads  

  • Lead the elaboration of system trade-offs in the area of satellite coms systems and in charge of the overall system architecture definition

  • Lead the elaboration of verification and validation concept at overall systems level and support of relevant tests

  • Collaboration of elaborating the operations concept as well as the preparation of operational requirements for the space and ground segment together with the dedicated systems engineers

  • Provide technical support to the project managers on planning, contractual changes and risk & opportunities identification.

Desired skills and qualifications 

  • Master’s degree in Telecommunications, Electronics or other related Engineering disciplines 

  • Excellent knowledge of military satellite communication systems (preferable with heritage on SATCOMBw) with > 10 years of experience

  • Profound knowledge of satellite communications engineering, i.e. technical interface, data flow (for user and management data) as well as TM/TC engineering (secure and unsecured) and user traffic

  • Strong knowledge of communication engineering including RF link budgets and antenna designs

  • Strong experience in software based systems, networks and IT infrastructure

  • Profound experience in modern Digital Payload-, Ground Station-, Spacecraft Control Center and Payload Control Center engineering

  • Experience in design, development, integration, verification, operations of Satellite Coms Systems and associated processes and operational procedures 

  • Experience in leading a multi-national engineering team

  • Business fluency in English and German (minimum C2 for both).
