Airbnb was born in 2007 when two hosts welcomed three guests to their San Francisco home, and has since grown to over 5 million hosts who have welcomed over 2 billion guest arrivals in almost every country across the globe. Every day, hosts offer unique stays and experiences that make it possible for guests to connect with communities in a more authentic way.
The Community You Will Join:
The world is changing how it works; not just in where we do it, but in how fast and how well we can do it. Airbnb has already shown that we can move with speed and intention. We navigated a pandemic, rebuilt our company from the ground up, had a successful IPO, and shipped product upgrades – all while working remotely. That experience didn't just change where we work. It changed what we believe is possible.
Now, a new shift is underway. AI is fundamentally changing the leverage available to every team – compressing timelines, breaking down traditional job description silos, raising the ceiling on quality, and enabling small, focused groups to accomplish what once required much larger ones. At Airbnb, we are not treating AI as a future consideration. We are moving fast to embed it into how we operate today – using it to multiply the impact of every employee, every system, and decisions we make every day. The companies and teams that embrace this shift with urgency and discipline will define what's possible in the years ahead. We intend to be one of them.
The Difference You Will Make:
The Systems Engineer is a hands-on builder who moves fast, delivers with quality, and uses AI as a force multiplier in day-to-day work. In this role, you will configure, maintain, and continuously improve Airbnb's Atlassian platforms, and you will own end-to-end delivery of defined projects within the Jira Data Center deprecation and transition to Jira Cloud. You will work autonomously on projects that span several components and may not be fully defined, partnering with senior engineers and your manager to shape the details. You will spot where AI and automation can reduce toil and improve reliability for the teams we serve, then build those improvements. You bring solid platform knowledge, sound technical judgment within your domain, and the curiosity to grow toward senior-level scope.
A Typical Day:
- Administer Jira Cloud Software (JSW), Jira Cloud Service Management (JSM), and associated Atlassian tooling; take ownership of assigned parts of the environment to improve reliability and quality, following established configuration standards and governance
- Design and implement Jira configurations including custom workflows, issue type hierarchies, permission schemes, notification schemes, screens, and field configurations aligned with Atlassian best practices, contributing independently to designs and seeking senior review where needed
- Deliver end-to-end migration workstreams within the Jira Data Center to Cloud program, such as migrating a set of projects or a configuration domain, coordinating with stakeholders on cutover readiness
- Configure Jira Service Management projects including SLAs, custom queues, JSM Forms, approval workflows, and security schemes to support internal service delivery teams
- Build and maintain dashboards and reporting using native Jira Cloud tooling; Airbnb has elected to avoid Atlassian Marketplace products for information security, privacy, and legal reasons. Support and maintain Airbnb's custom Forge applications in partnership with supporting systems engineering teams
- Support Atlassian access management, user lifecycle management, and license hygiene, and contribute to security posture improvements
- Partner with business stakeholders in requirements-gathering sessions, translate needs into configuration and automation solutions, and proactively highlight issues or risks in the work
- Configure Atlassian Rovo AI agents and automation rules; evaluate trade-offs between delivery speed and long-term sustainability, and apply AI responsibly and in context
- Write and maintain automation rules using Jira's native Automation engine and JavaScript; use the Jira REST API for integrations, data imports, and custom reporting
- Support testing cycles for platform changes and migrations; write and run test scripts, track defects, and ensure a rollback plan is in place before changes ship
- Participate in Agile ceremonies (sprint planning, retrospectives, standups) for platform-focused workstreams
- Keep system configurations, runbooks, and knowledge base articles up to date to support operational continuity and self-service
- Participate in the on-call rotation, respond to Atlassian platform incidents, and contribute to post-incident reviews
- Identify and reduce technical debt over time; provide constructive input in design and configuration reviews, and help teammates learn through specific examples and timely feedback
- Participate in hiring and onboarding, delivering clear and timely feedback on candidates
Your Expertise:
- BE/B.Tech or relevant technical degree
- 3+ years of hands-on Atlassian administration experience, including Jira Software and Jira Service Management (Jira Cloud) in enterprise environments
- Solid working knowledge of Jira workflow design, including post functions, validators, and conditions; strong command of JQL for filters, subscriptions, dashboards, and board configuration
- Hands-on experience contributing to Jira migrations (Data Center to Cloud), including project configuration migration and data integrity validation
- Experience configuring Jira Cloud native tooling for reporting and planning
- Flexible to work in USA overlapping work hours
- Hands-on experience with the Jira REST API using tools like Postman (GET/PUT/POST) for data extraction, integration, and reporting; maintaining integration touchpoints with AtlassianCloud through service account creation & management
- Familiarity with integrating Atlassian tools with identity providers such as Okta and LDAP, and with user lifecycle and license management practices
- Exposure to Atlassian Rovo or other AI/ML capabilities in the Atlassian ecosystem, with an interest in applying AI thoughtfully and ethically
- Experience building Jira Automation rules; working knowledge of JavaScript and JSON for custom automation
- Working experience with Jira Service Management, including SLA configuration, JSM Forms, custom queues, and approval workflows
- Experience writing and executing test scripts and documenting defects for platform changes or migrations
- Familiarity with Agile practices; SAFe or Scrum certification is a plus
- Clear written and verbal communication, with the ability to explain technical work to technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Ability to deliver autonomously in a remote-first, fast-moving environment and keep stakeholders informed of progress and blockers
- Familiarity with complementary enterprise tools such as Slack, Asana, Figma, Airtable, and Miro is an advantage
