Defence Sustainment Engineer (Reliability & Supportability)
Location: Melbourne, Australia
Work Arrangement: Hybrid (Tuesday-Thursday in office)
Salary: AUD $115,000-$135,000 plus 10% annual bonus opportunity
World Fuel Government Solutions is seeking a Defence Sustainment Engineer (Reliability & Supportability) to support the maintenance, reliability, supportability, and lifecycle management of complex Defence equipment and systems.
This role is ideal for a mechanically-minded engineer who enjoys understanding how equipment is designed, maintained, repaired, sustained, and improved throughout its operational life.
Unlike larger Defence organizations where engineers are often confined to a single specialty, this role provides exposure across sustainment engineering, reliability engineering, maintenance planning, lifecycle management, supportability, systems engineering, and Defence support programs.
You will work closely with experienced engineers, Defence customers, suppliers, and project teams while developing the skills required to become a future sustainment and supportability specialist.
This Is Not a Software or IT Systems Engineering Role

What You'll Be DoingSupport Defence Sustainment Activities
- Contribute to sustainment and lifecycle engineering activities across Defence programs.
- Support Integrated Product Support (IPS) and supportability activities.
- Assist with maintenance planning and asset management activities.
- Support reliability, maintainability, and supportability engineering initiatives.
- Support investigations into equipment failures, degradation, and maintenance-related issues.
- Participate in root cause analysis and problem-solving activities.
- Contribute to reliability improvement initiatives.
- Assist with maintenance optimization activities.
- Develop and maintain engineering documentation and sustainment records.
- Support preparation of maintenance instructions and technical procedures.
- Assist with user manuals, operating instructions, and support publications.
- Maintain configuration-controlled engineering documentation.
- Work closely with systems engineers, suppliers, project teams, and Defence stakeholders.
- Support engineering change and configuration management activities.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives focused on safety, reliability, and operational performance.
What We're Looking ForRequired Qualifications
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related discipline.
- 3+ years of engineering experience.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and analytical capability.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
- Australian Citizen able to obtain and maintain a Defence Security Clearance.

Skills Required
- Minimum 2 years in Systems Engineering or Requirements Management
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related field
- Understanding of the Systems Engineering Lifecycle
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
- Ability to work independently and proactively
- Registration on the National Engineering Register (NER)
