Harvard Business Publishing (HBP) – the leading destination for innovative management thinking. We reach lifelong learners to improve the practice of management in a changing world. This mission inspires each of us to unlock the leader in everyone – including you!

The opportunity:

A Systems Analyst manages and enhances computer systems directly for organizations or their clients. They review and assess how effective a company's current IT system is and build plans to improve any of the system's shortcomings or errors. Once they understand and identify which improvements to make, they can draft the new requirements and updates for the systems. Systems analysts help implement these enhancements and may continue monitoring their performance to potentially add any extra features.

What you’ll do:

  • Review current IT systems, such as: network, software and hardware features for any errors or issues.

  • Collaborate with employees and department heads to determine which system requirements are necessary to remain efficient.

  • Build new systems that address and fix any issues shown in the current systems.

  • Create analysis reports that represent the cost-benefit of any proposed upgrades.

  • Assist the IT team in implementing any new system that was recently drawn up and approved.

  • Test and troubleshoot any recently implemented plans to ensure they're operating efficiently.

  • Instruct other employees on how to use these new systems through training programs and documents.

  • Submit and implement all systems under strict deadlines and budget restrictions.

  • Gather and analyze system requirements.

  • Design and document systems.

  • Facilitate proper communication between stakeholders.

  • Ensure system quality and performance.

  • Manage system implementation and integration.

What you’ll bring:

  • Analytical skills: It's important that systems analysts have strong analytical skills because they often assess large amounts of data. Before determining which software system to install for an organization, systems analysts first collect and review data sets to identify issues and areas to improve.

  • Attention to detail: One of the primary duties of a systems analyst is to troubleshoot and test current systems to identify any potential errors, with discrepancies often being minuscule. Systems analysts can use attention to detail to find problem areas in current systems and to identify any issues with the new ones they install.

  • Communication: Systems analysts can benefit from having strong written and verbal communication skills, which they use to answer questions clients, employees or managers may have about the system and its performance. They explain complex terminology and issues in understandable terms when communicating in person or when drafting training materials in writing.

  • Interpersonal skills: When an issue arises with a company's computer systems, it's important that systems analysts possess interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with clients. Interpersonal skills, including patience and active listening, can help establish a trustworthy and loyal relationship between client and analyst.

  • Adaptability: As they add enhancements and updates to new programs, systems analysts may adjust accordingly to prepare for clients' and employees' notes and preferences. It's important that they're ready for any unexpected changes that may arise and cause the system to quit operating or malfunction.

  • Critical thinking: Some complex issues may appear that require systems analysts to evaluate the organization's needs and to design innovative and logical solutions using critical thinking skills. They can study their newly implemented programs carefully to find any additional problems and add changes to improve those issues.

  • Technical skills: Systems analysts spend a large amount of their time on the computer researching, updating and implementing new computer programs and their features. They use their advanced technical knowledge to understand which features can benefit certain systems and to meet the specific needs of employees and clients.

  • Time management: Systems analysts often have multiple responsibilities with deadlines, so managing time effectively to meet those deadlines is integral to the role.

You'll standout if you have:

  • Workday experience

  • 3 - 5 years of Systems Analyst experience

  • Experience with e-Commerce applications such as: Big Commerce, Piano, Braintree, Stripe, and others.
