Team Overview
The Distributed Systems Team is focused on building the framework that powers backend microservices at Sumo Logic - all the bits that make it easy to write and manage microservices at scale. They also provide tooling and infrastructure to interface and manage Kafka at Sumo. This is an opportunity to deeply engage with and impact all of Sumo Engineering.
What you’ll be working on:
- Build and improve Kafka messaging infrastructure, management tools, and observability.
- Build and evolve other critical infrastructures and associated libraries and tools: Zookeeper, Leader Election, Service Discovery, RPC/SOA framework, etc.
- Collaborate closely with other teams to ensure the effective use of tools, libraries, and frameworks developed by this team.
- Facilitate cross-team efforts to keep common libraries up to date, addressing security vulnerabilities and enabling the adoption of new features.
Your experience and skills include:
- B.S. or higher in Computer Sciences or related discipline
- 2 to 4 years of industry experience with a track record of ownership and delivery
- Ability to code proficiently in Java or Scala...(must have)
- Experience with data serialization frameworks such as AVRO and/or GRPC.
- Experience in running large scalable distributed services following a microservice architecture
- Experience in designing, developing, and implementing enterprise wide solutions based on Java Technologies (Java, J2EE, Web Services).
- Experience with cloud native environments built on public cloud (AWS, Azure, GCP).
- Demonstrated implementation of high-availability concepts
- Excellent troubleshooting skills
- Experience with the following highly desirable: Kafka, Akka, ZooKeeper

The expected annual base salary range for this position is $125k-150k. Compensation varies based on a variety of factors which include (but aren’t limited to) role level, skills and competencies, qualifications, knowledge, location, and experience. There is no yearly bonus or equity given at the SWE-2 level.
