The Role

Job Description

The Legal Support Group Manager is accountable for management of complex/critical/large professional disciplinary areas. Leads and directs a team of professionals. Requires a comprehensive understanding of multiple areas within a function and how they interact in order to achieve the objectives of the function. Applies in-depth understanding of the business impact of technical contributions. Commercial awareness is a necessity. Generally accountable for delivery of a full range of services to one or more businesses/ geographic regions. Excellent communication skills required in order to negotiate internally, often at a senior level. Some external communication may be necessary. Accountable for the end results of an area. Exercises control over resources, policy formulation and planning. Primarily affects a sub-function. Involved in short- to medium-term planning of actions and resources for own area. Full management responsibility of a team or multiple teams, including management of people, budget and planning, to include performance evaluation, compensation, hiring, disciplinary actions and terminations and budget approval.
Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for legal support activities related to legal operations, technology, budget/expenses, risk/controls, litigation/discovery/settlements or administration
  • Performs varied work requests from multiple sources that may be complex in character and have tight deadlines
  • Responsible for the management, planning, hiring, disciplinary actions, terminations and compensation decisions of the team
  • Follows strategies and business plans, policies and procedures created by the head of the function/group
  • Responsible for understanding of the firm's different businesses and the related economics
  • Makes recommendations on complex matters that may have a significant impact on the conduct of the organization’s business.
  • Identifies and implements strategies to improve efficiencies and reengineer processes
  • Manages horizontally and vertically across multiple functions both internally within Citi and externally with Outside Counsel and vendors
  • Provides subject matter expertise when necessary
  • Work with confidential information with the appropriate care and discretion
  • Appropriately assess risk when business decisions are made, demonstrating particular consideration for the firm's reputation and safeguarding Citigroup, its clients and assets, by driving compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations, adhering to Policy, applying sound ethical judgment regarding personal behavior, conduct and business practices, and escalating, managing and reporting control issues with transparency, as well as effectively supervise the activity of others and create accountability with those who fail to maintain these standards.


Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of experience
  • Prior experience in legal operations, legal environment or consulting environment
  • Exhibits confidence and agility in challenging times
  • Creates an environment where people hold themselves to the highest ethical standards
  • Excellent interpersonal and project management skills
  • Ability to interact and communicate effectively with Senior management
  • Must possess the ability to work with confidential information with the appropriate care and discretion
  • Ability to promote collaboration


Education:

  • Bachelors/University degree, Master’s degree preferred

    As part of the Legal Outside Counsel, Third Party Management and Operations team, the Legal Support Group Manager will provide management and direct oversight of the Legal Third Party Management group within Global Legal Solutions (GLS). They will be accountable for maintenance of the Legal Third Party Program which comprises of the Third Party Management Policy & Standards, global procedures, systems and activities required for the effective risk management resulting from external  relationships across the enterprise. This role will also provide guidance and direction to the rest of global Legal on all related activity within the described scope.

    Responsibilities:

    • Lead framework maintenance efforts, specifically those related to updates to the Third Party Management Policy and Standards.
    • Implement governance, methodologies and tools required for the effective oversight of Third Party Management practices across Legal.
    • Responsible for the performance management oversight of Legal Third Parties
    • Program/project management: Lead strategic and operational legal Third Party projects and programs with on-time and on-budget results
    • Manage outside counsel and other legal services vendor programs to ensure accountability and success. 
    • Ensure Legal Third Party performance and compliance with Terms, Citi Standards and benchmark activities against Legal industry standards.
    • Critically evaluate the design and execution of the Legal Third Party Program, identify potential enhancements and drive implementation of improvement initiatives to continually strengthen the Program.
    • Understand interdependencies between technology, operations and business needs
    • Engage with functional leadership across the enterprise, including, Independent Compliance Risk Management, Independent Risk, and Operational Risk Management, to ensure Legal's compliance with appropriate standards outlined in the TPM Policy and Standards
    • Maintain strong working relationships with key business partners throughout the organization, including leadership roles in Enterprise Risk, Operational Risk and Compliance
    • Provide metrics and associated reporting as appropriate for presentation to senior management
    • Responsible for the performance management oversight of Legal Third Parties
    • Program/project management: Lead strategic and operational legal projects and programs with on-time and on-budget results
    • Standardize and automate manual processes to improve workflows, knowledge sharing and collaboration among legal team members and the business
    • Work closely with other business lines to assist legal leadership with aligning Legal Third Party operations with business strategies, objectives, and goals.
