CSL is seeking a proven executive to lead the Data, AI and Automation organization for the company’s global operations through an impactful strategic transformation.
The role will require an accomplished leader with the technical foundation and credibility to chart a strategic digital, data and AI course while deploying contemporary technologies. This new leader will be responsible for collaboratively defining and evangelizing the global digital, data and AI strategy and expanding CSL’s technology and competitive advantage. The primary responsibilities of this role include enabling the Company’s digital and data/ AI-driven transformation, developing, and leading an AI strategy, leading the digital functional AI agenda, and advanced technology development and implementation. H/She will continue to build upon the contribution of the broader technology function to the company’s innovations.
The scope of this role extends to building out platforms for consuming large language models and automation tools in combination with internal data. This requires broad collaboration across internal stakeholders, including the technology office, privacy office, and cybersecurity. It also requires tight coupling with our data strategy. External partnerships and experimentation are also keys to accelerating the agenda.
This leader will orchestrate a senior and diverse team across the enterprise, working with business leaders to identify opportunities and raise the digital acumen of our people.
Measures of performance are focused on business outcomes, including productivity of frontline workers across the enterprise. Additional measures include the speed and scale of transformation, process efficiency improvements, and the ease of follow-on innovation.
The ideal candidate must be a strategic business partner and have a strong background in AI, data science, automation, and digital innovation for a large, regulated company; life sciences, defense industry or consumer packaged goods experience is desirable, while a multi-industry/ environment background is helpful. Building the talent pipeline and inspiring her/his team to excellence is a critical component of this role.
Key Responsibilities:
The key responsibilities of the role include but are not limited to the following:
- Strategic Leadership: Develop and execute a comprehensive AI, Data, and Automation strategy that aligns with the company's goals and objectives. Drive innovation and digital transformation across all functions. Create new sources of business value with strategic uses of (and protections from) AI and automation. Capture that value for the enterprise. Within the context of our strategy and culture, establish the company’s external AI and automation identity through publications, social media, events, and partnerships.
- Enterprise Orchestration: Work closely with cross-functional teams, including R&D, I&T Business Partners, E2E Operations, Commercial and Enabling Functions, to ensure seamless integration and adoption of AI, data, and automation solutions. Lead the ongoing enterprise-wide agenda (roadmaps, strategies, processes, adoption, value generation and benefits realization) for AI, data analytics tools, and related digital go-to-market technology products and services. Lead a senior and diverse group of business leaders who learn together, drive experimentation, and invest in high-value opportunities. Nurture the support of executive sponsors and the broader leadership group. Deliver a change management framework for ways of working with automation and AI. Accelerate the adoption of data strategy, GenAI and automation.
- AI and Data Analytics: Oversee the development and implementation of advanced AI and data analytics solutions to support drug discovery, clinical trials, patient engagement, operational efficiencies, and enabling functions. Ensure tight alignment between AI initiatives and the company's data strategy. Leverage data as a critical asset to drive insights and support decision-making processes, ensuring data quality, accessibility, and governance are at the forefront of all AI efforts. Drive the harmonization and democratization of data across the enterprise while improving access to data.
- Platform Ownership: Shape the evolution of business and technology platforms through innovation (e.g., LLM and RAG Models) and solution patterns (create, summarize, mine, and automate processes).
- Automation: Lead the automation strategy to enhance employee productivity, streamline processes, and reduce operational costs across the organization.
- Team Leadership: Build, lead, and mentor a high-performing team of AI, data science, and automation professionals. Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Building the talent pipeline and inspiring her/his team to excellence is a critical component of this role. Assess existing talent and organization structure, redeploying/re-skilling resources as necessary to focus on higher-value initiatives. Develop a strategy that enables CSL to build a diverse talent pipeline that ensures future success, including future internal succession candidates.
- Governance and Compliance: Establishment of enterprise AI governance committee to ensure that data governance, privacy, and security standards are met. Develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, and ethical and responsible development, adoption, and use of AI solutions at CSL.
- Partner Management and Orchestration: Establish and manage relationships with external stakeholders (vendors and partners) to identify and implement the appropriate AI, data and automation solutions. Nurture strategic relationships across academia, venture, and industry that accelerate our path to value with AI and automation.
- Benchmarking & External Presence: Participate in industry assessments and external communities for AI and automation, ensuring a tone of innovation and pursuit of excellence. Within the context of our strategy and culture, establish the company’s external AI and automation identity through publications, social media, events, and partnerships.
- Performance Measures: Establish XLAs (Experience Level Agreements), KPIs and metrics to measure the success and impact of AI, data, and automation initiatives. Regularly report on impactful progress to senior and executive leadership.
Related Experience:
- 20+ years of proven experience within digital and data technology with 10+ years leading digital and data/ AI for a large, regulated company; life sciences, defense industry or consumer packaged goods experience is desirable, while a multi-industry/ environment background is helpful, across multiple companies/environments. This will be a seasoned leader with the ability to develop the next generation of digital/ data/ AI leadership at CSL.
- Strategic thinker with a strong business acumen, global mindset and the ability to align technology initiatives with business goals.
- Excellent strategic leadership of technology and digital systems, infrastructure, platforms, architecture, applications, security, data analytics and AI, and service.
- Experience leading a data/ AI transformation that positively disrupts and transforms culture in and across functions and including governance and processes. Working knowledge of cybersecurity and privacy mechanisms.
- Deep experience managing a large group of partners, vendors and shared services firms.
- Outstanding communication and interpersonal abilities – demonstrated ability to interact and lead in a multi-functional context; able to engage with broad leadership. Communicates complex ideas in simple ways. Exceptional listener and collaborator.
- Both business-savvy and tech-savvy; demonstrates intellectual curiosity and is interested in solving business problems.

- Existing strong relationships and partnership with some of the key stakeholders and top digital, data and AI executives from the industry, professional networks, associations, or government institutions.
