Senior officer position responsible for overall strategic direction and general management of the Complex Claims organization including Major Loss Unit, Construction Defect and Unsupported Excess. This person will have a significant role in overall corporate and claim organization strategy/policy formulation and execution.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Performs a combination of duties in accordance with departmental guidelines:
- Partners with senior management to develop strategic and operational plans that have a substantial impact on the short-term success of claim losses in assigned claim organization and significant impact on the long-term success of the company.
- Ensures the achievement of continued profitability, growth objectives, and/or operational efficiencies for assigned claim organization.
- Develops and communicates strategic and operating plans and ensures performance objectives at all organization levels support those plans. Creates and maintains strategic clarity and links rewards to achievement of strategic goals.
- Leads, directs and has full management accountability for staff in area of responsibility with an emphasis on talent management and succession planning in accordance with corporate strategic direction.
- Drives continuous improvement through initiatives involving CNA's people, processes and technology.
- Develops and maintains appropriate metrics, reviews protocols, governance and control mechanisms. Benchmarks processes and results externally. Develops and maintains an organizational design in alignment with strategy and will produce outcomes including high claim-handling quality, stable ALAE and ULAE unit costs, low loss cost leakage and high customer satisfaction.
- Partners with underwriting, risk control and actuarial functions to ensure knowledge sharing on loss experience, trends, law changes, loss reserving, service issues, market challenges and new products.
- Communicates effectively with key stakeholders, senior executives, customers, board members, distributors, regulators, reinsurers and rating agencies.
- Act as an enterprise leader of CNA and Claim organization.
- Ensures compliance with all governance mandates within area of control.
May perform additional duties as assigned.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
- Extensive knowledge in several diverse disciplines or recognized professional fields, i.e. commercial insurance policy coverage and controlling laws, litigation management governance/control and comprehensive understanding of critical issues in other related areas.
- Advanced communication skills which are critical to building consensus across area of influence (external and/or internal relationships), team, and/or matrix environment.
- Superior leadership and management skills demonstrating integrity and professionalism.
- Proven ability to drive results by identifying and resolving significant problems within scope of responsibility.
- Extensive knowledge of the insurance industry, its products and services.
- Works well independently and as part of a team
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree with Master's preferred in finance or business or a related discipline, or equivalent.
- Typically a minimum of fifteen years of related work experience with commercial or Risk Management claims including technical claim handling, coverage interpretation, and claim/litigation, with ten years management experience.
- Applicable certifications preferred such as CPA, CPCU, or Fellowship.

I n certain jurisdictions, CNA is legally required to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. In District of Columbia , California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois , Maryland , Massachusetts , New York and Washington, the national base pay range for this job level is $247,000 to $392,000 annually.Salary determinations are based on various factors, including but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications and location.
