EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE 

Bachelor's degree in electrical or mechanical engineering or a closely related field is required. Six years of progressively responsible experience in transit maintenance, preferably car maintenance with at least four years of the experience at the supervisory level. Must have demonstrated ability to perform well given tight deadlines, extreme pressure and adverse conditions. Knowledge of Labor Agreement and experience dealing with union representatives required. An advanced engineering degree may substitute for two years of the experience requirement. Directly related experience may substitute for the degree on a year-for-year basis.

The selection process may include one or more components to demonstrate applicants’ knowledge, skills and abilities in job-related areas.  These may include exercises such as practical demonstrations, written communications, oral interview and/or competency assessments.

 

SUMMARY 

Serves as the replacement for the General Superintendent when required. Responsible for the administration and supervision of Car Maintenance Branch activities of the Office of Rail Maintenance, to include process management related to rail car maintenance, production planning and measurement, staffing, budget forecasting and oversight, and material control. On a twenty-four (24) hour basis, he/she will be required to respond and assume command during emergencies or major incidents. Oversees the operating budget and capital budget of the Office. Carries out major assignments in conducting the operations of the business. Performs work that affects business operations to a substantial degree.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

1. Assists with the overall work goals and activities.

2. Maintains staffing and supervises employees as appropriate to needs of branch.

3. Creates and maintains consistent quality and customer-focused team orientation among subordinate

employees which supports the division's mission.

4. Develops, or assists in the development of, administers, and maintains the branch's preventive maintenance,

proactive maintenance, and other work programs.

5. Identifies safety and training needs and ensures that necessary job-related instruction is provided to

employees.

6. Identifies, secures, and coordinates the procurement of tools/equipment/supplies needed to achieve the

branch's short and long-term objectives; subject to budgetary constraints.

7. Carries out major assignments in conducting the operations of the business.

8. Performs work that affects business operations to a substantial degree.

9. Performs other duties as assigned, including Transit Ambassador assignments.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsible for the administration and supervision of Car Maintenance Branch activities.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS 

Must have or obtain Wayside level 3 certification within 30 days.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS 

On a 24-hour basis, required to respond and assume command during emergencies or major incidents.
