Statement of Purpose
The Supervisor supervises assigned staff, coordinates program activities, and provides clinical and administrative leadership.

Major Tasks, Duties and Responsibilities
• Performs or delegates the responsibilities in this job description as appropriate.

• Assists with operation of the facility.

• May be responsible for minimum caseload, especially during times of short staffing, e.g. staff on vacation, empty positions, or medical leave.

• Assures that documentation is timely and meets contract, licensing, certification and other required standards. Reviews client files for accurate and timely documentation as well as appropriate application of program services to meet client needs.

• Assures that outcomes are completed and submitted to the Clinical Director timely and accurately.

• Participates in public relations activities, including community education, referral sources and resources, cooperative relationships with other service providers, social service agencies, criminal justice agencies, community based organizations and insurance providers as appropriate based on the needs of the facility or of a specific client(s). Coordinates public relations activities with the Community Relations and Marketing Department.

• Assists in maintaining BHS visibility in the community, including attending appropriate meetings and functions.

• Provides leadership and serves as a positive role model to staff and clients.

• Provides input into the development and maintenance of policies and procedures.

• Supervises, trains and orients staff and volunteers.

• Attends trainings as appropriate to fulfill requirements, update job skills and promote development, and arranges for staff to do the same.

• Recommends human resources actions such as hire, discharge, warning and disciplinary actions. Takes part in and documents any actions taken. Prepares performance evaluations.

• Carries out safety program in assigned area to achieve and maintain a safe work area and safe work practices.

• Ensures proper and economical use of staff, equipment, supplies, and facility. Ensures that assigned facility area of responsibility is maintained in a good and safe state of repair.

• Monitors verbal and written release of information by staff.

• Represents BHS well in all contacts. Works as a team member. Maintains cultural sensitivity at all times.

• Maintains familiarity with BHS policies and procedures and other applicable regulations. Performs job duties accordingly.

• Attends meetings and participates in committees as assigned.

• Knowledge of drug and alcohol dependency, mental health, family systems and 12-Step/recovery resources in the community.

• Ability to write clear statements, summarizing client’s feelings, expressions, resistance and response to their treatment plan; goals and objectives. Includes letters to referral agencies, courts/probation.

• Ability to confront behavioral changes, identify a crisis, and recognize when additional assistance is necessary.

• Ability to recognize personal issues that has an impact on job performance and interactions with clients.

• Ability to demonstrate ethical and professional behavior.

• Ability to convey respect for cultural and lifestyle diversities of clients and staff.

• Knowledge of referrals, both in and out of the BHS treatment system.

• Knowledge of the philosophy and approach of the 12-Step model of recovery (AA, CA, NA, Alanon).

• Ability to communicate clearly, with clients, staff, peers, supervisors and non-BHS resources.

• Knowledge of computer operations; Windows and word processing (MS Word). Knowledge of the Caminar information system.

Supervisor Competencies and Performance Expectations

All Supervisors are expected to:

• Manage personnel to meet program objectives
• Assist program director to maximize utilization
• Maintain health and safety standards of facility
• Adhere to professional standards

Prerequisite Qualifications
Following are the qualifications required to perform the essential functions of this position. Qualifications may be subject to modification based on the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Bilingual abilities may be required within certain BHS programs.

Completion of a state-recognized chemical dependency counselor certification. Required current certification number issued from a statewide or nationwide credentialing body (i.e. CCAPP, CAADE) received upon completion of passing the California Certification exam. or a Master’s degree in related field, MFT or MSW licensed waivered.  Minimum five years’ substance abuse work experience. Failure to maintain certification or licensure will result in loss of employment.

Knowledge of County, Federal and State program standards. Experience with accreditation and certification preferred.

Knowledge of drug dependency, mental health, recovery and family systems required. Knowledge of the philosophy and approach of the 12-step program.

Must have valid California driver’s license and liability insurance if driving personal vehicle on BHS business.

Vision, hearing, manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination must be adequate for performance of job duties. Able to sit at desk, use keyboard, write and physically perform other job duties. Able to move about the facility to observe clients and staff.
