2027 Technology Internship – ATI Specialty Materials
Location: Richburg, SC
Program Duration: 10 Weeks | Summer 2027
Target Students: Rising Juniors & Seniors – Materials Science & Engineering
Solve Manufacturing Challenges Through Materials Science – Intern in Technology at ATIAt ATI, we engineer specialty materials that power the next generation of aircraft, spacecraft, surgical implants, and energy systems. As a Technology Intern, you’ll apply your Materials Science and Engineering knowledge to real-world manufacturing challenges. You’ll work with plant teams to investigate material defects, analyze mechanical and metallography data, and monitor experimental material processing to identify trends and support improvements.
What You’ll Work OnDepending on your project assignment, you may:
- Investigate material defects throughout the plant to help determine their source and recommend process changes to reduce defect occurrence.
- Analyze mechanical and metallography data against processing history to identify trends and processing conditions associated with unacceptable results.
- Observe and monitor experimental material lots throughout processing to measure improvements and respond to unforeseen processing challenges.
- Apply materials science principles and data analysis to support manufacturing process improvements.
- Collaborate with technical and plant personnel to communicate findings and develop potential solutions.
- Hands-on experience applying Materials Science and Engineering principles in a manufacturing environment.
- Practical experience investigating material defects and processing-related issues.
- Experience analyzing mechanical testing and metallography data alongside processing history.
- Exposure to experimental material processing and evaluating process improvements.
- Development of technical problem-solving and data analysis skills.
- Experience working with plant and technical teams to identify and address manufacturing challenges.
- Opportunities to strengthen technical communication and report-out skills.
- A deeper understanding of how processing conditions influence material properties and product results.
Preferred Qualifications
- Currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in:
- Materials Science & Engineering
- Related Materials or Metallurgy discipline
- Interest in working in a manufacturing environment.
- Understanding of fundamental materials science and metallurgy concepts.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to review and interpret technical and process data.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with manufacturing and technical teams.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
