2027 Mechanical Design Engineer Internship – ATI Specialty Materials

Locations: Monroe, NC

Program Duration: 10 Weeks | Summer 2027

Target Students: Undergraduate and Graduate– Mechanical, Electrical, Aerospace, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Manufacturing Engineering, or related Engineering programs

Design Solutions That Move Manufacturing Forward – Intern in Mechanical Design Engineering at ATI

As a Mechanical Design Engineer Intern, you’ll support projects that improve manufacturing equipment, processes, and safety across ATI’s Monroe operations. You’ll apply your engineering and CAD skills to real-world challenges involving equipment design, automation, reverse engineering, and process improvement.

What You’ll Work On

Depending on your project assignment, you may:

• Support efforts to improve or automate portions of the chill plate removal process in Melt.
• Reverse engineer an ESR baseplate to support equipment design and engineering activities.
• Develop improvements to the safety of loading and unloading the Tank 3 mold cart into the tunnel.
• Provide general Monroe Operations project support based on departmental needs.
• Use CAD and engineering principles to support equipment improvements, modifications, and design projects.
• Collaborate with Operations and Engineering teams to identify problems and develop practical solutions.

1. Hands-on experience with mechanical design and engineering in a manufacturing environment.
2. Practical experience using CAD and reverse-engineering techniques to support equipment projects.
3. Exposure to melt and ESR manufacturing operations and equipment.
4. Experience working on projects focused on automation, equipment improvement, and workplace safety.
5. Opportunities to collaborate with Engineering, Maintenance, Operations, and other cross-functional teams.
6. Experience applying engineering principles to real-world manufacturing challenges.
7. Potential opportunity to transition into a full-time ATI position, based on business needs and available positions.

Preferred Qualifications

• Currently pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in:
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Aerospace Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering Technology
  • Manufacturing Engineering
  • Related Engineering discipline
• Basic experience with CAD software, such as:
  • SolidWorks
  • Autodesk
  • Other comparable CAD platforms
• Strong mechanical aptitude and interest in equipment design and manufacturing processes.
• Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
• Ability to apply engineering concepts to hands-on manufacturing and equipment challenges.
• Ability to work collaboratively with Engineering, Maintenance, Operations, and other cross-functional teams.
• Willingness to work in a plant and manufacturing environment.
