Summer 2027 Intern – Actuarial Benefit Consulting Services

Location: Hartford, CT (on-site & in-person)

Duration: 10 weeks from June 2, 2027 to August 6, 2027

Schedule: Full-Time (40 hours/week)

Compensation: $26.50 - $30.50 per hour (based on academic level and number of Society of Actuaries exams passed)

Program Overview

Empower’s Summer Internship Program offers an immersive 10-week experience designed to develop rising professionals with an interest in financial services.  Our interns thrive in a fast-paced, growth-oriented environment while gaining valuable insights into our business, culture, and mission.

Each intern is paired with a dedicated manager, mentor, and executive sponsor, and will work on a meaningful summer project.  This program includes:

  • Hands on-experience with real business initiatives

  • Exposure to senior leadership and cross-functional teams

  • Networking opportunities

  • Professional and personal development workshops

At the conclusion of the internship, each intern presents their work to business leaders, showcasing the impact they’ve made.

What you’ll do

As an Actuarial Benefit Consulting Services Intern, you will gain hands-on experience to help you develop a consultative and holistic mindset.  Your responsibilities may include:

  • Understanding defined benefit, defined contribution, and retiree healthcare plans, as well as equity compensation and consumer directed health solutions

  • Analyzing client data used to develop pension plan liabilities

  • Reconciling census changes and associated gains/losses

  • Preparing ERISA funding valuations and government filings

  • Supporting annual employer match true-up and non-elective allocation calculations

  • Assisting with single and multi-year cost projections, plan design optimization projects, and complex non-discrimination testing

  • Developing tools and models to streamline actuarial workflows or support analysis of plan data

  • Performing actuarial research and statistical analyses

  • Learning to work in a collaborative environment and build professional skills

  • Delivering an assigned individual and group project

During your internship, you will contribute to both an individual project and collaborative team initiatives.  You are expected to deliver meaningful contributions and results, with ongoing support, guidance, and feedback from your team. 

What you bring

We’re seeking college students who demonstrate a balance of technical aptitude, professionalism, and curiosity.  Ideal candidates will bring the following:

Required Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in a college or university (Bachelor’s or Master’s program)

  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25

  • Available for full 10-week program (June 2, 2027 to August 6, 2027)

  • Must reside near or be able to reliably commute to Hartford, CT.  This is an in-person internship 

  • Intermediate Microsoft Excel skills

  • Authorization to work in the U.S. without current or future visa sponsorship (CPT/OPT not supported)

What will set you apart

  • At least 2 years of academic progress toward a bachelor’s degree

  • Expected to graduate and be available for full-time employment by mid-2028

  • Preferred majors: Actuarial Science, Statistics, Mathematics, other relevant math-focused majors

  • Passage of one or more Society of Actuaries exams preferred

  • Comfortable working with large datasets

  • Microsoft Office products including Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) and/or Python coding knowledge preferred

Base Salary Range

$50,300.00 - $69,125.00

The salary range above shows the typical minimum to maximum base salary range for this position in the location listed. Non-sales positions have the opportunity to participate in a bonus program. Sales positions are eligible for sales incentives, and in some instances a bonus plan, whereby total compensation may far exceed base salary depending on individual performance. Actual compensation offered may vary from posted hiring range based upon geographic location, work experience, education, licensure requirements and/or skill level and will be finalized at the time of offer.
