2027 Powder Atomization Process Engineering Internship – ATI Specialty Materials
Location: Monroe, NC – Baker’s Powder Processing
Program Duration: 10 Weeks | Summer 2027
Target Students: Undergraduate and Graduate students currently pursuing Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related Engineering disciplines
Engineer the Process Behind Advanced Materials – Intern in Powder Atomization Process Engineering at ATI
At ATI, we engineer specialty materials that power the next generation of aircraft, spacecraft, surgical implants, and energy systems. As a Powder Atomization Process Engineering Intern, you’ll work alongside Engineering and Operations teams to improve manufacturing processes, support automation initiatives, and enhance the quality and consistency of powder production. You’ll apply your engineering knowledge to hands-on projects involving process optimization, error-proofing, and melt cleanliness.
What You’ll Work On
Depending on your project assignment, you may:
- Configure barcode scanning to error-proof the BPO can-up process, collaborating across plants with the Oakdale (OAK) team.
- Develop a process to perform addbacks and dilutions on BOSS at BPO, reducing reliance on manual processing.
- Support melt cleanliness initiatives.
- Analyze process data and manufacturing information to identify opportunities for quality and process improvement.
- Partner with Operations and Engineering teams to develop and implement practical process improvements.
- Hands-on experience with powder atomization and specialty materials manufacturing.
- Practical experience with process improvement, automation, and error-proofing.
- Experience supporting cross-plant engineering collaboration and process standardization.
- Exposure to melt cleanliness, ultrasonic testing (UT), and quality improvement initiatives.
- Opportunities to apply engineering principles to real-world manufacturing challenges.
- Experience working with Engineering and Operations teams on projects designed to improve process consistency, quality, and efficiency.
- Experience developing solutions that reduce manual processes and process variation.
- Potential opportunity to transition into a full-time Process Engineering or related Engineering position at ATI after graduation.

- Rising junior or senior preferred.

- Ability to analyze process information and identify opportunities to improve quality and consistency.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills.
- Ability to work effectively with Engineering, Operations, and cross-functional teams.
- Willingness to work in a manufacturing and plant environment.
