The Role

The Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law is a nonpartisan law and policy institute that seeks to improve the systems of democracy and justice in the United States. We work to hold our political institutions and laws accountable to the twin American ideals of democracy and equal justice for all. The Brennan Center’s work ranges from voting rights to campaign finance reform, from ending mass incarceration to preserving Constitutional protections in national security policies. Part think-tank, part advocacy group, part cutting edge communications hub, we start with rigorous research. We craft innovative policies. And we fight for them – in Congress and the states, in the courts, and in the court of public opinion.       
We are seeking an intern in our Washington, DC, office to support the Multimedia and Media teams in our Communications department. The intern would provide video, editing, production, research and administrative support to the Multimedia team, and research, writing, and administrative support to the Media team.  
 

Note: This internship is in-person at our Washington, D.C. office. 

Responsibilities:
All interns will assist with general research and administrative work for the Brennan Center, including coordinating meetings, and drafting routine correspondence. Additionally, there will be opportunities to attend and observe substantive meetings, events, and conversations on program work. 
In addition to administrative duties and supporting Brennan en Español as needed, specific responsibilities include:  

  • For the Multimedia team – Assisting with creating video assets for Brennan Center’s digital platforms by filming videos with Brennan Center experts in office or on location. Interns will also assist with script writing, editing short-form video, researching stills, and motion and music for video production.  

  • For the Media team – Brainstorming press strategies, creating and updating press lists, drafting occasional pitches, archiving press clips, and researching journalists and producers.    

Other responsibilities for the Multimedia team may include the following:  

  • Assisting on video shoots, including set up and filming using iPhones, lighting, and sound equipment  
  • Supporting with media management by ingesting and organizing video footage 

  • Researching and gathering video elements, including sourcing footage, stills and music  

  • Supporting team with video editing on Adobe Premiere Pro  

  • Monitoring and researching latest social media trends to help inform team on emerging trends that influence video strategy and publication  

  • Familiarity working in a fast-paced environment, ability to follow video production schedules and ensure that deadlines are met  

  • Collaborating with various team members on projects, comfortable receiving, tracking, and applying feedback 

  • Ability to lift 40 lbs. 

Qualifications:
The ideal candidates are independent self-starters, friendly, cheerful, energetic, punctual, resourceful, positive, detail-oriented, and highly organized. Must have a sense of humor! Interns must also have excellent research, writing, and communication skills; a strong visual vocabulary; and a passion for Brennan Center issues.  
Candidates should be proficient with Adobe Creative Suite with preferred experience in Premiere Pro, AfterEffects, Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator.

Experience with Zoom, Dropbox, Slack, Eventbrite, Canva, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Word is also preferred (Software license will be provided by company.)
Fluency in Spanish (speaking, reading, and writing) is preferred.

Hours: Monday – Friday (9:00am – 5:00pm EST)   
Pay: 

  • Undergraduate Student: $17.95 per hour 

  • Graduate Student: $20.45 per hour 

Duration: June – August 2026 (10 weeks)

Note: The Brennan Center will follow the rules of your school regarding internships. Therefore, if a school doesn’t allow you to do a paid internship for some reason (i.e., receiving credit, etc.), then your internship will not be paid. In addition, if you are participating in a formal school internship program that allows you to work more than our stated hours, we will make a determination based on our needs and further assessment of your school’s program.
