The Opportunity:

Unity Environmental University Career Edge seeks enthusiastic and experienced individuals to serve as Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to support the development of undergraduate courses within our Workplace Readiness curriculum. These courses are part of Unity’s innovative, workforce-aligned academic model and are delivered in five-week terms as asynchronous, online courses designed for diverse learners.

SMEs will collaborate closely with an academic dean and a learning experience designer to shape course content, learning activities, and assessments that are engaging, applied, and accessible to undergraduate learners.

Course to Be Developed

ENCJ 2020 Investigative Communication for Law Enforcement

This course provides students with opportunities to develop communication strategies specific to investigative and enforcement contexts. Students practice professional writing, evidence-based reporting, and interpersonal communication skills critical to interviews, testimony, and engagement with interested and affected parties. Emphasis is placed on accuracy, ethics, professionalism, and adapting communication approaches for diverse audiences.

Students will:

  • Produce professional investigative reports that clearly and accurately present evidence
  • Demonstrate effective interviewing techniques in simulated investigative settings
  • Adapt communication strategies for different audiences, including courts, communities, and agencies
  • Apply ethical principles when communicating sensitive investigative information

Role Responsibilities

  • Advise on course scope and specific learning outcomes
  • Select and/or design content that supports effective investigative communication and reporting
  • Translate professional communication practices from investigative, enforcement, legal, or regulatory settings into student-facing instructional materials
  • Develop applied assignments (e.g., investigative reports, interview exercises, audience-specific communication projects)
  • Collaborate with academic leadership and learning designers in an iterative development process
  • Ensure content reflects ethical standards and professional expectations in investigative communication
  • Incorporate inclusive communication practices for diverse audiences and interested and affected parties.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in Criminal Justice, Environmental Policy, Communications, Public Administration, Law, Journalism, or a related field
  • Professional experience involving investigative reporting, enforcement communications, regulatory compliance, legal communications, or related work
  • Strong understanding of professional writing, interviewing techniques, and evidence-based communication
  • Ability to explain communication concepts clearly and accessibly for undergraduate learners
  • Strong written communication skills, including the ability to create clear, student-facing instructions
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work collaboratively in a remote environment
  • Proficiency with standard computer applications (e.g., Outlook, Word, Excel) and familiarity with modern productivity tools

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience teaching, training, or mentoring adult or undergraduate learners
  • Background in online or distance education
  • Experience preparing reports, testimony, public communications, or regulatory documentation
  • Familiarity with environmental, wildlife, natural resource, or regulatory enforcement contexts
  • Experience working with diverse groups and interested and affected parties
  • Personal commitment to sustainability, workforce development, and Unity’s environmental mission
