Job Description

The Strategy Project Director leads the strategic plan development for assigned client groups (i.e. hospitals, physician enterprise, support services). The Director supports assigned client group Executive leadership with creation of strategic plans, operational strategies (e.g., Service Line, Ambulatory) and annual plans.

The Director supports Strategic Planning department leadership in development of strategic initiatives tied to system priorities. This leader also serves as functional area subject matter expert and team lead over respective area of expertise (i.e. project management, market intelligence, change and communications).

This role may include management of a variable number of direct reports, with responsibility for coaching, development, workload prioritization, and performance management.

Job Responsibilities

​Strategic Planning and Business Case Development

  • Leads and facilitates the development of specific strategies and business cases by collaborating with Operations, Financial Planning, Facilities, and Marketing teams.

  • Utilizes consistent and standard process to develop plans from initiation through approval.

  • Develops and maintains organizational strategic planning frameworks and methodologies. Produces strategic plans that detail business problems, industry and market drivers and assumptions, aspirations, interdependencies, and linkage to overall strategy for executive review and to aid decision-making.

  • Delivers business cases that detail business problems, industry and market drivers and assumptions, feasibility, Pro Forma, and market analysis for executive review and to aid decision-making. Leads analyses to evaluate strategic options and synthesizes complex qualitative and quantitative data into executive-ready insights.

Cross-Functional Leadership & Strategic Consultation

  • Coordinates within team and across organization to ensure projects and strategies are threaded. Provides ongoing strategic consultative support to client groups.

  • Coaches operational leaders (e.g., Service Line Leaders, Senior Vice Presidents, and Chiefs) about process, data analysis, and system strategy to support development of their strategic plans and business cases.

  • Advises on implications of emerging healthcare trends, industry models and future-state operating environments on strategic plans.

  • Leverages competitive intelligence, patient demand, and consumer research provided by Market Intelligence team.

Executive Communication and Stakeholder Influence

  • Develops and delivers executive-level presentations, communication materials, and strategic narratives.

  • Coaches operational leaders—such as Service Line Leaders, Senior Vice Presidents, and Chiefs—on process, data interpretation, system strategy, and strategic-plan development.

Project and Program Management

  • Uses project management tools to document progress made with strategic planning and initiatives.

  • Oversees project governance, risk mitigation and resource alignment for assigned strategic initiatives.

  • Serves as Project Manager on large, complex strategy initiatives.

Functional Area Leadership and Expertise

  • Serves as the primary subject matter expert for the assigned functional area (e.g., project management, market intelligence, change management, communications), providing authoritative guidance to leaders and project teams.

  • Leads and coordinates functional area work, including planning, prioritizing, and reviewing deliverables to ensure high-quality, timely execution aligned with organizational goals.

  • Develops, implements, and continuously enhances standards, methodologies, and best practices, while mentoring team members to build capability and deepen expertise across the organization.

People Leadership and Team Development

  • Provides leadership and direction to a variable-sized team of direct reports and/or mentees, ensuring clarity of expectations, alignment to organizational priorities, and high-quality execution.

  • Coaches, develops and mentors team members to build capability, strengthen performance, and support professional growth.

  • Allocates work, sets priorities, and manages capacity to meet evolving strategic needs.

Candidate Requirements

We are seeking candidates with the following attributes:

Experience
  • At least five years of experience in healthcare strategy development.

  • Demonstrated experience in developing creative solutions to complex problems.

  • Experience in healthcare strategy consulting is preferred.

  • Experience in strategy implementation within a hospital or healthcare setting is preferred.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in healthcare administration, business administration, or related field demonstrating aptitude for critical thinking and application of scientific method is required.

  • Master’s degree in business administration is strongly preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Healthcare strategy and operations expertise. Deep understanding of emerging healthcare issues, health system models, and trends. Knowledge of hospital operations, physician enterprise models, ambulatory care and support services.

  • Strategic planning, execution and project management expertise. Knowledge of strategic planning frameworks, goal setting, and performance measurement. Proficiency in project management methodologies, including scope, timeline and risk management. Familiarity with change management and strategic communications practices.   

  • Market intelligence, data analytics, and business analysis expertise. Understanding of healthcare finance concepts including business case development, ROI, and contribution margin. Familiarity with budgeting and annual planning cycles. Knowledge of market research methods, understanding of healthcare data sources and familiarity with data visualization and reporting.  

  • Strategic thinking and analysis. Demonstrated ability to think strategically, synthesize complex information and apply structured problem-solving approaches. Proven ability to turn data into actionable insights that influence business decisions. Proficient in quantitative and financial analysis including Excel and data visualization.

  • Communication and influence. Strong executive presence, excellent verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to influence senior leaders and exercise sound judgement and discretion in dealing with sensitive and confidential information. Ability to craft clear, compelling executive-level presentations and narratives (Word and PowerPoint).

  • Ability to work autonomously and in a dynamic environment. Demonstrated ability to initiate activities and work autonomously while collaborating effectively across functions. Resourceful and self-directed, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and stakeholders. Able to perform at a high level in a dynamic environment subject to impromptu changes in schedules, priorities and project scope.
