Job Description:

At MKTG, we believe sport and entertainment can move people, shape culture and change behaviour. We use insight, strategy and creativity to help brands show up in the moments that matter, creating work that connects with audiences, builds brand value and delivers measurable impact.

We’re looking for a Strategy Director to help shape the thinking that defines our best work, strengthens our reputation in market and wins new opportunities. Working across some of Australia and New Zealand's most exciting sports and entertainment brands, you’ll turn insight into distinctive strategic platforms, lead responses to key briefs and pitches, and bring clients and teams with you through clear, confident storytelling.

Reporting to the Head of Strategy, this role sits at the centre of strategic client work, new business and agency thought leadership. You’ll help set the standard for strategic rigour at MKTG, shaping work that earns attention, drives client growth and builds the kind of reputation that opens doors.

You’ll collaborate daily with a multidisciplinary team of researchers, creative storytellers, sponsorship consultants, brand activation specialists and producers. Together, you’ll turn insight into integrated ideas that are strategically sharp, creatively distinctive and built to perform in the real world.

This is a permanent role, working in a hybrid model in either our Richmond office in Melbourne or CBD Sydney office (The Commons).

Responsibilities include:

  • Translate client briefs into clear strategic platforms that guide sponsorship, sport, entertainment, brand and creative work.

  • Turn insights into action by uncovering cultural, consumer and category trends that inform client recommendations and creative direction.

  • Set clear strategic direction that inspires creative, consulting, and activation teams to produce work that is distinctive, effective and award-worthy.

  • Lead strategic presentations and senior client conversations, translating complex information into clear narratives that build confidence, shift thinking and influence decisions.

  • Lead strategic thinking for new business pitches, RFP responses and proactive growth opportunities, helping MKTG create a sharper market presence and stronger reasons for clients to choose us.

  • Champion effectiveness by connecting strategic thinking to measurable outcomes, ensuring ideas are grounded in evidence and built to deliver commercial value for clients.

  • Enhance strategic processes to improve delivery and output (Strategy Quality & Differentiation).

  • Drive thought leadership to ensure the agency can stay ahead of market, fan and cultural trends.

A bit about you:

  • A track record of shaping high-quality strategic work, with examples of thinking that has influenced clients, strengthened creative responses or contributed to new business wins.

  • An experienced strategist from a media, creative, brand, communications or consulting background who can turn data, culture and human insight into sharp strategic narratives.

  • A commercially minded strategic thinker with a strong understanding of brands, culture, consumers and the role sport and entertainment can play in business growth.

  • You’re energised by the chance to work with Australia’s leading leagues, teams, athletes and brands, uncovering the insights and stories that help create work people notice, remember and act on.

  • Deep understanding of the sport and entertainment ecosystem, and the trends that are defining the future for both rights holders and brands.

  • A collaborative and emotionally intelligent team player who builds trusted relationships and brings positive energy.

  • Comfortable working with varied inputs, from research and performance data to cultural signals and client context, then shaping them into a clear strategic direction.

  • Confident, credible and persuasive with senior stakeholders, with the communication skills to simplify complexity and bring people with you.

Become a champion for meaningful progress:

Our diverse and inclusive culture enables our employees to bring their whole selves to work and be proud of doing so. For us, this is the foundation for great innovation which, in turn, generates better outcomes for our people, partners and communities. This is why we encourage applications from people with disabilities, and of all ages, nationalities, backgrounds and cultures.

Together we make our mark. Together we embrace the true potential of disruption. And together – across all our locations – we help our clients win in a changing world.

If you want to belong to a one global network where opportunities are limitless – we look forward to welcoming you.
