Job Description

Times Opinion is hiring a Staff Editor to help to shape episodes of The Ezra Klein Show, as it expands into video.

This job is primarily focused on the show’s post process, helping to shape the raw tape into the best version of the show – in both audio and video forms. This includes doing paper edits of interview transcripts, giving notes on cuts, adapting our episode intros into compelling visual scripts, and exploring other format experiments for the show in video. Throughout the post process, this person will work with the audio engineer and video editor, as well as the show’s producers. And while most of the job is on the post side, there will be some production work too – supervising our shoots, alongside the DP and supervising producer.

This job involves jumping between video and audio, so the ideal candidate should be comfortable in different mediums – a structure master and visual thinker, who also has a deep understanding of non-visual storytelling. They should have experience producing video journalism – writing scripts, finding archival, and working with a video editor to create polished cuts. And they should also have story editing experience – in video, audio or print – across a wide range of topics, from politics and policy to culture and society.

The ideal candidate should also be very familiar with The Ezra Klein Show — and excited to help shape the show for a new medium and develop its visual language.

Responsibilities:

  • Edit episodes for both audio and video, including line edits and structural notes as needed, or reviewing producers’ work.

  • Write short video scripts for the show’s intros, including archival research

  • Review fact-checks and make final calls.

  • Give editorial feedback to producers on edits, headline-writing, show copywriting, and video script-writing

  • Supervise film shoots of podcast episodes

  • Review, gives notes on, and approve video cuts of video podcast episodes

  • Pitch episode ideas and participate in editorial meetings

  • Play an important role in helping to define and execute show strategy; establish and regularly measure progress to goals.

  • Give input into the design and execute a video social media strategy

  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 5+ years in a news environment.

  • 2+ years producing video journalism.

  • A firm understanding of the differences between audio and video

  • Solid news and editorial judgment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with the Ezra Klein Show

  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, deadlines and time-management.

  • Experience with fair use and licensing agreements

  • A history of working in a newsroom

  • Experience with YouTube and social video strategy
