Role and Responsibilities
- Develop, lead, and manage the Mechanical Start Up team, including recruiting, hiring, onboarding, training, mentoring, performance management, and development of startup technicians.
- Serve as the primary leader and technical resource for Mechanical equipment startup, pre-commissioning, troubleshooting, turnover support, and equipment warranty activities.
- Work closely with the Director of Operations and Mechanical leadership team to develop the startup and warranty strategy, staffing plan, operating procedures, performance expectations, and long-term growth of the group.
- Plan, schedule, prioritize, and assign startup technicians across active Mechanical projects based on project schedules, equipment readiness, commissioning milestones, warranty needs, and available resources.
- Coordinate startup activities with Mechanical project team, controls, electrical, TAB contractors, commissioning agents, manufacturers, and other trade partners.
- Establish and maintain standardized startup procedures, pre-functional checklists, testing documentation, equipment records, deficiency tracking, warranty logs, and closeout requirements.
- Ensure equipment and systems are ready for startup by verifying installation quality, electrical and controls readiness, piping and duct system readiness, manufacturer requirements, accessibility, cleanliness, filters, strainers, valves, vents, drains, supports, isolators, rotating components, and other pre-start requirements.
- Oversee and, when necessary, assist with startup and functional testing of mechanical equipment and systems including AHUs, RTUs, VAV systems, split systems, pumps, VFDs, chillers, boilers, cooling towers, hydronic systems, compressors, fans, exhaust systems, makeup air systems, domestic water systems, and associated controls.
- Ensure startup technicians can effectively read and interpret mechanical drawings, P&IDs, wiring schematics, control sequences, submittals, installation manuals, specifications, and manufacturer startup requirements.
- Provide technical leadership for troubleshooting complex equipment or system failures during startup, commissioning, turnover, and warranty periods; coordinate OEM or specialty support when required.
- Coordinate and support hydronic fill, flush, pressure testing, pump alignment, system cleaning, and other pre-commissioning activities as applicable.
- Ensure startup documentation is complete, accurate, timely, and organized for project records, commissioning, TAB, closeout, owner turnover, and warranty support.
- Manage warranty requests associated with equipment installed by the Mechanical team, including intake, prioritization, technician assignment, troubleshooting, manufacturer/vendor coordination, documentation, and closure.
- Track recurring equipment failures and warranty trends; communicate lessons learned and corrective actions to Mechanical leadership, project teams, engineering, estimating, procurement, and field operations as appropriate.
- Review startup and warranty performance with Mechanical leadership, including workload, staffing, response times, open deficiencies, recurring issues, labor utilization, cost impacts, and opportunities for process improvement.
- Work with MSS Safety representatives and field leadership to maintain strong safety performance and compliance for startup technicians working in active construction environments.
- Maintain professional communication with general contractors, owners, commissioning agents, subcontractors, vendors, manufacturers, and internal MSS teams.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Successful candidate must possess a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from a two-year college, military training or technical school with a minimum of 8 years ‘experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Previous experience managing a team.
- Regular and supervisory probation period required, if applicable.
- Random drug testing required.
- Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record required.
- Must successfully pass a background check & drug test.
- Physical Demands: Frequent sitting, occasional stooping, crouching, kneeling, balancing, and climbing. Frequent standing, walking, reaching and gripping. Clear speaking and adequate hearing sufficient to communicate effectively and respond appropriately in-person and/or on the telephone, vision sufficient to read source materials and computer screen data, and repetitive motions for computer equipment use.
- EPA Refrigerant Certification
- OSHA 30 certification preferred or ability to obtain
- Material Handling: Frequent lifting up to 50 lbs. and constant lifting up to 25 lbs., placing this position in the very heavy physical demand classification (PDC).
Work Environment: Exposure to weather, extreme heat or cold, high noise intensity level, atmospheric conditions, exposure to electrical shock, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, wet and/or humid, vibration, proximity to moving mechanical parts, working high exposure places (job sites) and/or an office environment with conditioned air and bright lights.
