Why join Freenome?
Freenome is a high-growth biotech company developing tests to detect cancer using a standard blood draw. To do this, Freenome uses a multiomics platform that combines tumor and non-tumor signals with machine learning to find cancer in its earliest, most-treatable stages.
Cancer is relentless. This is why Freenome is building the clinical, economic, and operational evidence to drive cancer screening and save lives. Our first screening test is for colorectal cancer (CRC) and advanced adenomas, and it’s just the beginning.
Founded in 2014, Freenome has ~400 employees and continues to grow to match the scope of our ambitions to provide access to better screening and earlier cancer detection.
At Freenome, we aim to impact patients by empowering everyone to prevent, detect, and treat their disease. This, together with our high-performing culture of respect and cross-collaboration, is what motivates us to make every day count.
Become a Freenomer
Do you have what it takes to be a Freenomer? A “Freenomer” is a determined, mission-driven, results-oriented employee fueled by the opportunity to change the landscape of cancer and make a positive impact on patients’ lives. Freenomers bring their diverse experience, expertise, and personal perspective to solve problems and push to achieve what’s possible, one breakthrough at a time.
About this opportunity:
Freenome is hiring a Staff Systems Integration Engineer (NGS Technologies) to provide technical leadership and contribute to the development of next generation NGS assays/products for early cancer detection. You will work in a Product Development team of world-class Scientists and Engineers focused on delivering Freenome’s IVD assay portfolio.
If you are passionate about deploying the power of NGS-based diagnostics in clinical care, have a high sense of ownership, and take pride in providing technical leadership to a growing team of Systems Integration Engineers, while continuing to make an individual impact, we would love to speak with you!
As part of a dynamic, flexible company you will be adapting to rapid technological progress and change, and help the team building the platform do the same.
The role reports to the Senior Director, Development & Scientific Operations. This role will be a Hybrid role based in our Brisbane, California headquarters.
What you’ll do:
- Define the strategy and architecture to build fully automated NGS workflows that deliver Freenome’s next generation diagnostic products
- Drive and evaluate resulting system performance, speed and throughput, and identify root causes for system-level issues and failures
- Provide subject matter expertise to dFMEA, pFMEA, risk management, hazard assessment, and design review sessions with Engineering, Automation, and Systems Integration teams. Analyze outputs and identify HW, FW, and SW mitigating solutions to implement adequate risk control measures.
- Lead the definition and documentation of system interfaces and interface requirements, lead system/product-level integration, bug/defect tracking and configuration management, refine system architecture and module dependencies, define system verification and validation plans, and test complex modules and systems, ensuring that components of the system are integrated from low-level HW to top-level UI and function as a whole. Adopt a hands-on approach to troubleshoot system-level issues observed with existing products as well as Next Generation products under development
- Lead the system evaluation process through development and execution of system level test plans and protocols, including data analysis, interpretation and communication of results and their impact through written reports, design reviews, and interactive discussions
- Provide technical solutions to a wide range of difficult problems. Exercise latitude in determining technical objectives of the assignment methods and in selecting techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining resolution using risk-based assessment (including dFMEA analysis and input into System Hazard Analysis)
- Apply technical rigor to guarantee high quality of technical and design control documentation in alignment with Freenome’s Quality requirements
- Lead day to day activities of junior Systems Engineers/Scientists and/or laboratory staff
Must haves:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering or science with 12 years minimum direct work experience, or Master’s degree in engineering or science with 8 years minimum direct work experience, or PhD in engineering or science with 5 years minimum direct work experience
- Direct experience in developing NGS assays and/or NGS-based diagnostics, including hands-on experience working with different NGS workflow automation solutions as well as a solid understanding of commercially available automation options
- Experience in a regulated environment is a must and prior experience with clinical diagnostic products is highly desirable. Hands-on experience in the deployment of high throughput and fully automated NGS-based diagnostics in a Clinical laboratory setting is a strong plus
- A strong technical background and experience within Systems Engineering Requirements Management, Hazards Analysis, System Architectural Development, Functional Modeling, Systems Integration, Statistical Test Design, Verification and Validation, Reliability Engineering, and Failure Modes Effects Analysis
- Technical team leadership and experience with defining the technical strategy for programs and products
- Definition, planning, and execution of multi-cycle integration test, risk retirement, and characterization activities in an Agile environment against tight schedules and deadlines
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills to understand system interfaces and be able to quickly analyze, troubleshoot, and resolve system interoperability problems
- Excellent communication skills and proven leadership in influencing stakeholders across functional boundaries
- Statistical data analysis and reporting software, such as JMP, Minitab, or Excel statistics macros
- A proven ability to apply fundamental scientific and engineering principles to evaluate processes and offer practical solutions to technical challenges is also strongly desired
