Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems has an opening for a Staff Systems Architect Engineer to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals within our Systems Engineering organization. This role is located in Melbourne, FL.
In this role, you will provide senior technical leadership in model based systems engineering, requirements development, and architecture definition for a complex aerospace system. This role focuses on using Cameo to capture and manage system requirements, functional and physical architectures, and interfaces across the program lifecycle.
You'll also lead requirements and architecture development in Cameo, ensuring the digital system model remains the authoritative source for requirements, behaviors, and interfaces. This individual will collaborate closely with chief engineers, IPTs, and specialty engineering disciplines to maintain a coherent, traceable architecture that supports design decisions, mission effectiveness, and verification planning.
Responsibilities
- Lead requirements development, decomposition, and traceability within Cameo, translating customer and stakeholder needs into system, segment, and subsystem requirements.
- Develop and maintain system architectures (operational, functional, and physical) using SysML and MBSE methods, including use case, activity, sequence, block definition, and internal block diagrams.
- Integrate requirements, behaviors, and interfaces into a cohesive model that supports mission analysis, system design, and verification/validation strategies.
- Establish and enforce modeling conventions and guidelines to ensure consistency and quality across contributors and IPTs.
- Coordinate architecture and requirements updates with multi disciplinary teams (mission systems, avionics, ground systems, communications, vehicle teams, etc.) and capture cross discipline impacts.
- Generate model based views and reports to support technical reviews (SRR, PDR, CDR, etc.), demonstrating requirements coverage, interface definition, and design maturity.
- Provide MBSE and Cameo guidance, mentoring, and training to engineers contributing to the model.
- Collaborate with requirements management and configuration management to baseline the Cameo model and maintain alignment with tools such as DOORS/DOORS Next.
Basic Qualifications
- Must have a Bachelors of Science degree in a STEM field and at least 12 years of relevant military / professional experience, OR a Master's Degree in a STEM field and at least 10 years of relevant military / professional experience, OR a PhD and at least 8 years of relevant military / professional experience
- Must have an active US Government Secret or higher clearance (with a background investigation completed within the last 6 years or currently enrolled into Continuous Evaluation).
- Must have extensive systems engineering experience with emphasis on requirements development, decomposition, and architecture definition for complex systems.
- Must have direct experience using Cameo/MagicDraw (or equivalent MBSE tool) for SysML based modeling, including creation and maintenance of system level models.
- Must have experience in leading technical teams or work packages and to communicate complex technical concepts to diverse audiences, including customers and senior leadership.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting mission planning and ground systems, including definition of operational concepts, workflows, and interfaces between air vehicle and ground mission systems.
- Experience defining and managing air vehicle requirements, including performance, mission, avionics, and integration requirements, and capturing those requirements in an MBSE/Cameo model.
- Experience with mission systems and communications architectures, including data links, networks, and interfaces between onboard systems, ground segments, and external assets.
- Proven application of MBSE/SysML to represent mission threads, mission planning workflows, or end to end operational scenarios that span vehicle, mission systems, and ground systems.
- Hands on experience integrating Cameo models with requirements management tools (e.g., DOORS/DOORS Next) and generating traceability/coverage reports.
- Prior role as a systems engineering or MBSE lead on a large, complex defense or aerospace program, preferably involving air vehicle, mission planning, or communications systems.
Skills Required
- Bachelor of Science degree in a STEM field and at least 12 years of relevant military or professional experience; or a master's degree and at least 10 years; or a PhD and at least 8 years
- Active US Government Secret or higher security clearance, with a recent background investigation or enrollment in Continuous Evaluation
- Extensive systems engineering experience focused on requirements development, decomposition, and architecture definition for complex systems
- Direct experience using Cameo, MagicDraw, or an equivalent MBSE tool for SysML-based modeling
- Experience creating and maintaining system-level models
- Experience leading technical teams or work packages
- Ability to communicate complex technical concepts to diverse audiences, customers, and senior leadership
- Experience supporting mission planning and ground systems, including operational concepts, workflows, and air vehicle-ground system interfaces
- Experience defining and managing air vehicle requirements, including performance, mission, avionics, and integration requirements
- Experience with mission systems and communications architectures, data links, networks, and interfaces
- Experience applying MBSE and SysML to mission threads, mission planning workflows, or end-to-end operational scenarios
- Experience integrating Cameo models with DOORS or DOORS Next and generating traceability or coverage reports
- Previous systems engineering or MBSE leadership experience on a large, complex defense or aerospace program
