Visa’s Technology Organization is a community of problem solvers and innovators reshaping the future of commerce. We operate the world’s most sophisticated processing networks capable of handling more than 65k secure transactions a second across 80M merchants, 15k Financial Institutions, and billions of everyday people. While working with us you’ll get to work on complex distributed systems and solve massive scale problems centered on new payment flows, business and data solutions, cyber security, and B2C platforms.     

The Opportunity: 

We are looking for Versatile, curious, and energetic Software Engineers who embrace solving complex challenges on a global scale. 

As a Staff Software Engineer, you will be a senior individual contributor in a multi‑functional development team inventing, designing, building, and testing software products that reach a truly global customer base and power Visa’s next generation of payment products. You will lead complex technical initiatives while mentoring engineers and influencing engineering standards across teams. While building components of powerful payment technology, you will get to see your efforts shaping the digital future of monetary transactions.   

The Work itself: 

  • Design code and systems that touch 40% of the world population while influencing Visa’s internal standards for scalability, security, and reusability. 
  • Collaborate multi-functionally to create design artifacts and develop best-in-class software solutions for multiple Visa technical offerings. 
  • Actively contribute to product quality improvements, valuable service technology, and new business flows in diverse agile squads. 
  • Develop robust and scalable products intended for a myriad of customers including end-user merchants, b2b, and business to government solutions. 
  • Leverage innovative technologies to build the next generation of Payment Services, Transaction Platforms, Real-Time Payments, and Buy Now Pay Later Technology.
  • Opportunities to make a difference on a global or local scale through mentorship and continued learning opportunities. 

Essential Functions:

  • Demonstrates relevant technical working knowledge to understand requirements.
  • Identifies and contributes to the development and solution strategies to team members that improve the design and functionality of interface features across one or more project features, under minimal guidance.
  • Applies standard processes on the use of programming languages (e.g. HTML, C++, Java) to write code that fulfills technical requirements. 
  • Contribute to the development, testing, and delivery of new features from concept through production
  • Contribute to the creation and maintenance of technical documentation, design artifacts, and standard engineering practices.
  • Analyzes bugs for simple issues and applies debugging tools to verify assumptions.

This is a hybrid position. Expectation of days in office will be confirmed by your hiring manager.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of relevant software engineering experience with a Bachelor’s degree OR 2+ years with an Advanced degree OR equivalent practical experience.
  • Demonstrated experience designing, developing, and supporting production software systems.
  • Strong skills in one or more general development languages (e.g., Java, C#, C++) and modern front-end frameworks.
  • Experience building distributed systems and scalable services, familiarity with microservices and API design.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with CI/CD, automated testing, and DevOps practices to support rapid, reliable delivery.
  • GenAI exposure: experience building or integrating GenAI capabilities (LLMs/NLP, prompt engineering, AI APIs) or applying GenAI to improve engineering efficiency and automation.

  • Challenge the Status Quo: Comfort in pushing the boundaries, ‘hacking’ beyond traditional solutions
  • Technical Expertise: Strong expertise in one or more general development languages (e.g., Java, C#, C++) along with working knowledge of front‑end technologies such as React, Angular, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
  • Experience with cloud‑native and container‑based technologies (e.g., Kubernetes, Docker, CI/CD pipelines) and solid understanding of data structures, algorithms, and system integration concepts.
  • Experience with database technologies, including relational and NoSQL systems.
  • Builder: Experience building and deploying modern, scalable backend services, APIs and web applications with quality. Understanding of systems integration, distributed computing, and performance optimization. Familiarity with high‑availability, 24x7 production environments.
  • Learner: Constant drive towards continuous learning and staying current with emerging technologies.
  • Innovation: Apply GenAI‑assisted engineering practices to accelerate delivery (e.g., AI‑assisted code generation/review, test creation, documentation, runbook automation) and share best practices across the team. Help build or integrate GenAI-enabled capabilities where relevant (e.g., LLM/NLP integrations, prompt engineering patterns, AI APIs) while maintaining secure coding and quality standards. Champion improvements to engineering processes and tooling that enhance productivity and product quality, including automation and modern CI/CD practices.
  • Partnership: Experience collaborating with Product, Test, Dev-ops, and Agile/Scrum teams
  • Good-to-have: Experience and working knowledge of test automation tools/payment industry/fintech is a plus.
