About the RoleAs a Staff Software Engineer you’ll be a technical authority responsible for transforming our API ecosystem, shaping integration strategies (including with AI assistants), and architecting solutions at scale. You’ll work at the intersection of distributed systems, developer productivity, and reliability—driving innovation across our platform while mentoring engineers and partnering closely with leaders across the organization.
What You’ll Do:- Architect and implement scalable, performant APIs that serve as the backbone of CircleCI’s developer experience.
- Lead complex, cross-functional engineering projects that improve the scalability, reliability, and usability of our systems.
- Design and implement advanced integration points with AI tools and agents to extend developer capabilities.
- Partner with stakeholders to define and execute technical strategy that aligns with company goals.
- Mentor engineers, lead design reviews, and drive a culture of technical excellence and learning.
- Tackle our most challenging production incidents, applying deep systems expertise to identify and resolve root causes.
- Advance our observability and telemetry systems to support rapid debugging and system optimization.
- 8+ years of backend-focused engineering experience with a strong track record of building and scaling distributed systems, APIs, and cloud infrastructure.
- Proficiency in Go is a must—you’ve used it extensively in production systems and are comfortable architecting complex backend services in a Go-based ecosystem.
- Experience leading 0-to-1 initiatives, from early technical exploration to launching scalable, production-ready systems in ambiguous, fast-paced environments.
- Deep knowledge of modern backend architecture, including microservices, event-driven systems, and API design (REST, gRPC, or GraphQL).
- Strong operational experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure), container orchestration (Kubernetes), and observability best practices.
- Ability to design resilient systems with an emphasis on performance, reliability, and maintainability.
- A track record of technical leadership—mentoring engineers, guiding design discussions, and contributing to long-term architectural strategy.
- Deep expertise in CI/CD, including build systems, test automation, and deployment across diverse stacks.
- Hands-on experience with LLMs in engineering workflows—from code generation to AI agents—with strong prompt design and awareness of ethical and security considerations.
