Role Overview
We’re looking for an experienced Staff Software Engineer who excels at technical problem-solving and has a broad impact across the organization.  You’re skilled at designing and shipping high-quality code, with a focus on maintainability, scalability, and performance.  You have architected and built large scale, distributed systems, and implemented shared frameworks or design systems.  You take pride in supporting and educating others.

As a Staff Engineer, you’ll play a leading role in designing, developing, and supporting embedded Linux software, focusing on Python application engineering.  Your work will span traditional web application development, Linux system development, and IoT software development.  You’ll identify and implement iterative improvements to legacy software running on the device today and play a leading role in bringing our next-generation products to market.

In this role, you’ll be a builder, collaborator, and mentor.  You’ll work alongside engineers from your team, and across the organization to implement improvements to the core infrastructure running on the Graykey.  You’ll drive technical decision making with a willingness to listen, and a bias towards action.

NOTE: Candidate must reside in The United States or Canada.

What You’ll Do

  • Contribute directly to our codebase, building features as well as addressing bugs and technical debt directly with an eye towards code quality and best practices.
  • Drive design for complex software projects, and work with Engineering Managers to delegate work across many different engineers. Be willing and able to assist these engineers in implementing designs, while being open to feedback and modifications.
  • Take ownership of major initiatives, and drive them to completion with minimal oversight.  You flag concerns and blockers early, and are detail-oriented in your work.
  • Collaborate with other engineers.  Soft skills are a must in this role, as you will be expected to drive technical discussions within and across many engineering teams.  You should be capable of navigating interpersonal challenges and strong opinions with a cool head.

What We're Looking For

  • 12+ years of professional backend development experience, and a Bachelor’s degree in a Computer Science, Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field  OR
    • 10+ years of professional backend development experience + a master’s degree in a relevant field OR
    • 8+ years of professional backend development experience + a PhD in a relevant field OR
    • 15+ years of professional backend development experience.
    • 6+ years of professional experience working on Python application development.
    • 3+ years of professional experience working with Linux servers, local or in the cloud.
    • Strong interpersonal skills, able to drive technical decision making across many talented engineers with strong opinions.
    • Strong system design and architecture skills for Web and/or IoT products.
    • Strong knowledge of web security and cryptography.
    • Strong knowledge of networking fundamentals (DNS, firewalls, etc).

Nice to Have Skills

  • Experience with Linux Administration, Linux System Development, and/or Linux Kernel Development.
  • Experience with AI/ML systems, both in terms of AI-assisted development and AI/ML-driven feature development.
  • Experience with software and hardware security for IoT devices.
  • Experience with containerization platforms like Docker or Kubernetes.
  • Experience with virtualization technology (Virtual Machine, QEMU, KVM).
  • Experience with Gitlab pipelines, and/or related CI/CD infrastructure development (Jenkins, Github, etc).
  • Experience with JavaScript/Typescript and ReactJS.
  • Experience with Bash scripting.

Indicators of Success

We’re looking for someone who checks off most, but not all, of the boxes listed in “skills and experiences”.  It’s more important to us to find candidates who can display indicators of success through skills they have developed and experiences they have been a part of, than to find folks who have ‘been there, done that”.  We want to be part of your development journey, and we’ll learn as much from you as you learn from us.

How We Work

At Magnet Forensics, we take a hybrid-flexible approach to support your productivity and work-life balance. If you’re within a comfortable travel distance to one of our offices, you’ll occasionally join us in person. These in-person moments help us build stronger connections, spark new ideas, and celebrate our successes together. Most days, you can choose what works best for you, while staying in tune with your team’s goals.

We’re excited to welcome you to our team and look forward to achieving great things together - both in the office and wherever you work best!
