Overview

As a Staff Frontend Engineer on the Customer Experience team, you will be a technical anchor for the customer-facing experiences that define how people buy a vehicle with us. You will drive frontend architecture across key parts of the purchase journey, covering trade-in, vehicle configuration, finance and leasing, and delivery, building interfaces that are fast, accessible, and crafted to earn customer trust at every step.

You will shape how the team approaches UI architecture, component systems, and frontend performance, and you will work closely with engineering, product, and design to raise the quality bar on everything the customer sees and interacts with.

What you’ll do

Become part of an iconic brand that is set to revolutionize the electric pick-up truck & rugged SUV marketplace by achieving the following:

  • Lead frontend architecture decisions across your domains, making considered choices about component design, state management, rendering strategy, and application structure that the team can build on confidently.
  • Build high-quality, performant customer-facing experiences end-to-end, from UI implementation through API integration, error handling, and production monitoring.
  • Own frontend performance within your domains: Core Web Vitals, rendering performance, and UI resilience when backend services or third-party integrations are degraded.
  • Contribute to and help evolve the shared component library and design system, ensuring consistency, accessibility, and good developer ergonomics across customer-facing surfaces.
  • Partner closely with product and design, contributing a strong technical perspective to interaction and UX decisions and flagging tradeoffs that affect performance, accessibility, or long-term maintainability.
  • Drive technical initiatives within the team, authoring design docs and RFCs and establishing frontend patterns that become the default way the team builds.
  • Conduct thorough code and design reviews, author architectural decision records, and help maintain a high engineering bar across the team.
  • Mentor and grow senior engineers, helping them sharpen their architectural thinking, design system instincts, and ownership of the customer experience.
  • Champion accessibility as a core engineering requirement throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Champion pragmatic AI-assisted development, evaluating tools, contributing to team norms, and helping engineers use them effectively.

Location & Travel Expectations:

  • This role will be based out of the Scout Motors corporate headquarters in Charlotte, NC
  • This role requires occasional attendance in the office for in-person meetings and events.
  • Applicants should expect that the role will require the ability to convene with Scout colleagues in person and travel to participate in events on behalf of the company from time to time.

What you’ll bring

We expect all Scout employees to have integrity, curiosity, resourcefulness, and strive to exhibit a positive attitude, as well as a growth mindset. You’ll be comfortable with change and flexible in a fast-paced, high-growth environment. You’ll take a collaborative approach to achieve ambitious goals. Here's what else you'll bring:

  • Education/Certifications: A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, or a related technical field
  • 8+ years of frontend engineering experience, with staff-level or equivalent technical scope.
  • Deep expertise in modern frontend technologies including WebGL, GSAP, Framer, and Astro, with a focus on building performant, maintainable systems.
  • Strong command of React and TypeScript, including advanced patterns, performance optimization, and application architecture at scale.
  • Experience contributing to or owning component libraries and design systems.
  • Solid instincts for UX and interaction design, with the ability to think about the customer experience and not just the implementation.
  • Strong grasp of frontend performance: Core Web Vitals, rendering strategies (SSR, SSG, CSR), code splitting, and bundle optimization.
  • Solid understanding of web accessibility standards (WCAG) and experience building inclusive experiences in practice.
  • Proven ability to lead technical work through design docs, architecture reviews, and influence within and across teams.
