Job Overview:
The Developer platform team is part of Coupang’s Technical Infrastructure organization and is responsible for Coupang’s developer experiences including Coupang’s internal workload management and microservice ecosystem which scales to thousands of microservices. We are in a process to revolutionize our developer experiences and internal infrastructure by adopting the best technologies available. We are looking for a Staff Software Engineer to scale our Code Gen infrastructure.
What You Will Do
We are looking for someone passionate about scaling developer productivity through technology and automation, with experience leveraging AI/ML to improve software development lifecycle. As a Staff Software Engineer in Developer platform, you will partner with leaders of multiple platform teams. You will work closely with the product team to define and implement simple solutions of complex infrastructure problems while ensuring to build a highly scalable, reliable and efficient platform for our customers. You will technically lead projects working on full stack development teams using JAVA, AWS, Kafka, Kubernetes, gRPC and service mesh. You will be accountable for raising the bar on engineering and operational excellence.
In this role, you will:
- Architect and design large-scale AI systems, including inference, recommendation, and interactive agentic systems that are self-learning and security/compliance-aware.
- Design, develop, and deploy robust AI models, with a focus on large language model (LLM)-based agent systems and deep learning generative/multi-modal models for e-commerce customer scenarios.
- Customize, tune, post-train, and fine-tune AI models to optimize performance, including foundational models for building learning systems.
- Build and implement AI techniques such as Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) and/or Model Context Protocol (MCP) to provide additional context for agents.
- Develop effective strategies for interacting with AI models via prompts, leveraging AI to automate complex tasks and enhance operational efficiency.
- Build end-to-end AI pipelines for storing and servicing foundational models.
- Mentor and guide team members on frameworks, methodologies related to LLMs, RAGs, their limitations.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand requirements and ensure foundational models and knowledge alignment with the company's overall AI strategy.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related technical fields.
4+ relevant software development experience.
- Demonstrated experience in AI/ML Engineering
Preferred Qualifications
- Hands-on experience integrating, building, and deploying robust AI systems and models, with an emphasis on large language models and multi-modal models.
- Expertise in large language model fine-tuning and deployment, including proven experience with post-training and optimizing AI models.
- Experience building and deploying Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG)and/or Model Context Protocol (MCP) systems, along with a thorough understanding of RAG and its limitations for multi-modal knowledge retrieval.
- Strong understanding of how to interact with AI models via promptsfor optimal results.
- Demonstrable experience using AI systems to automate complex tasks.
Pay & Benefits
Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. At Coupang, your base pay is one part of your total compensation.
The base pay for this position ranges from $138,000/year in our lowest geographic market to $297,000/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on several factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
