General Position Summary:

The Staff Physician works as part of the Johnson Health Center (JHC) health care team, performing a variety of patient-centered services, including assessments, diagnoses, evaluations, implementation of treatment plans, and monitoring of follow-ups for patients. Physicians also assist in supervising community health center Physician Assistants (PAs) or Nurse Practitioners (NPs) as appropriate.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Patient Relations:

  1. Obtains complete medical history from patient, and/or family, and/or previous medical record, etc.
  1. Educates the patient and family member on the patient’s diagnoses and treatment options within the scope of knowledge and authority.
  1. Coaches and supports the patient in self-management of their health.
  1. Teaches and counsels patients and families in a culturally sensitive manner.

Staff Relations/Team Building:

  1. Consults with physicians and other members of the health care team as necessary and facilitates communication between all members of the health care team.
  1. Promotes the Team-based Care Model by participating in daily huddles and Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) bi-weekly team meetings to communicate and collaborate on patient issues and needs.
  1. Performs other necessary duties as required by the JHC to meet the goal of providing primary health care services.

Clinical Duties:

  1. Provides primary medical care by caring for all patients in accordance with the physician's medical specialty.
  1. Assesses, diagnoses, implements treatment, evaluates, and monitors patients' health status.
  2. Performs complete physical examinations on patients.
  1. Utilizes center-selected evidence-based care practice guidelines when managing chronic conditions and counseling patients on health care self-management.
  1. Diagnoses acute and chronic illness on the basis of clinical findings, laboratory and x-ray reports, and/or the results of other diagnostic procedures according to approved protocols.
  1. Collaborates, initiates, and monitors agreed-upon treatment plans with patients assigned to the Staff Physician, using protocols and/or consultation with a consulting physician.
  1. Refers patients requiring hospitalization, an assessment, and management of conditions to emergency department physicians or appropriate specialists.
  1. Renders emergency care and treatment, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation, starting IV fluids, and ordering appropriate emergency medications. Sutures the lacerations and addresses acute orthopedic injury with splinting if within the provider’s scope of care.
  1. Physical attendance is an essential element of the job and necessary to perform the essential functions of the Staff Physician position.

Administrative Duties           :

  1. Reviews other providers’ notes as per the “Chart Review Policy” of the JHC.
  1. Maintains all patient records to comply with required standards, reviews records regularly, and obtains physician counter signatures where necessary.
  1. Manages time to preserve a patient-focused, team-based approach for rendering optimal health care.

Performance Improvement Activities:

  1. Attends all medical staff meetings and participates in the JHC QI program.

Safety/Infection Control Activities:

  1. Attends all mandatory OSHA infection control seminars and follows general OSHA guidelines for infection control, including “Universal Precautions.”

2.   Abides by all JHC infection control policies, including acute response measures in the setting of a public health concern or disease outbreak.

Competencies:

  1. Proficient in collaborating with patients using a team-based approach to health care management.

Other Functions:

  1. Staff members must abide by the Code of Conduct as documented in the Corporate Compliance Manual.
  1. Must demonstrate a personal and professional commitment to JHC and its mission.
  1. Treats all patients and staff with dignity and respect, mindful of the cultural differences of the diverse population we serve.
  1. Assures that any job functions that are added or changed as organizational needs require by Management are performed accurately, completely, and efficiently.
  1. Keeps professional licenses required for the position current and up to date. Obtains all continuing education required for license renewal.

Physical Demand and Working Environment:

Fast-paced office setting with travel to other offices often. Lifting and/or exerting force up to 25 pounds occasionally, with frequently moving of objects. Work requires speaking, sitting, bending, walking, standing, hearing, and stooping, kneeling, and repetitive motion with certain activities. OSHA high-risk position.

Qualifications
  1. Graduation from an accredited medical school with a degree in Doctor of Medicine or Osteopathy.
  1. Completion of an approved residency program in his/her medical specialty.
  1. License to practice medicine in the State of Virginia.
  1. The ability to relate effectiveness to the patients and staff. Must be qualified in Basic Life Support techniques.

Skills Required

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) degree from accredited medical school
  • Completion of an approved residency program in medical specialty
  • License to practice medicine in the State of Virginia
  • Qualified in Basic Life Support (BLS) techniques / ability to perform CPR
  • Ability to relate effectively to patients and staff (communication and interpersonal skills)
  • Physical attendance on-site is required (travel to other offices often)
  • Maintain current professional licenses and complete required continuing education
  • Ability to render emergency care including starting IV fluids, ordering emergency medications, suturing, splinting when within scope
