Our mission is to enable creators everywhere to make what the world needs right now.

At Carbon, our mission goes beyond 3D printing.  We are enabling creators everywhere to make what the world needs, right now.  Our company is built on the idea that diverse fields of study must come together to solve intractable problems. We have grand ambitions to create technology that will influence industry around the world. You will be joining a diverse team with a vibrant culture, where team success is as important as celebrating individual contributions.

Help us change the world and we will help you change yours.

Working at the intersection of hardware, software, and molecular science, Carbon delivers on the promise of 3D printing by helping commercial customers move beyond prototyping to produce real-world parts. Every one of those parts starts with a print job that flows through our cloud, so the infrastructure that runs it has to be fast, safe, and boringly reliable.

We are looking for a Staff Infrastructure / DevOps Engineer to join a small, high-trust platform team that owns the foundations everything else at Carbon runs on: our AWS and GCP footprints, the networks that connect our cloud to printers in the field, the Terraform that describes all of it, and the CI/CD pipelines that ship software to production. You will be a core owner of that platform, drive substantial initiatives across it end to end, and raise the engineering bar for how we build and operate cloud infrastructure at Carbon.

You will:
  • Operate & Extend Multi-Cloud Infrastructure: Be a core owner of our AWS and GCP environments that host our Tier-0 services, keeping them resilient, cost-efficient, and secure while extending them to support the next generation of Carbon products.
  • Build the Network Between Cloud and Printer: Design and maintain the networking that connects our cloud services to a global fleet of printers, including VPCs, peering, DNS, load balancing, TLS, and secure edge connectivity. You will make sure a printer in a customer's factory can reach the cloud reliably, no matter where it is.
  • Run Services on Kubernetes with Istio: Be a core owner of the Kubernetes clusters and Istio service mesh that our platform runs on. You will drive substantial improvements to cluster architecture, workload isolation, traffic management, mTLS, and observability, and help application teams run their services on the platform safely and confidently.
  • Own Infrastructure as Code in Terraform: Take end-to-end ownership of substantial Terraform initiatives, from module design through rollout. You will help shape our IaC standards, keep our state and module ecosystem healthy, and make it easy for other engineers to ship infrastructure safely.
  • Ship Software Faster and Safer with CI/CD: Lead major improvements to our Jenkins and GitHub Actions pipelines: faster builds, safer deploys, better feedback loops, and clear paths from a merged PR to production. You will help define what "good" looks like for delivery at Carbon.
  • Own Reliability Alongside the Product Teams: Participate in on-call for the platform, drive incident response and postmortems on the initiatives you own, and turn recurring pain into permanent fixes. You will help other teams adopt strong operational practices for the services they own.
  • Technical Leadership & Mentorship: Work as a senior technical contributor across infrastructure, security, and application teams. You will translate real product and operational needs into robust designs, raise the bar through design and code review, and mentor engineers around you.
You have:
  • Seven or more years of experience building and operating production cloud infrastructure, with deep expertise in at least one of AWS or GCP and working proficiency in the other.
  • Strong networking fundamentals: VPCs, subnets, routing, DNS, load balancing, TLS, VPNs, and secure connectivity between cloud and on-prem or edge devices.
  • Expert-level Terraform. You have designed modules others depend on, managed state at scale, and led non-trivial migrations without downtime.
  • Hands-on experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines in Jenkins and GitHub Actions (or comparable systems), including build performance, artifact management, and safe deployment patterns.
  • Strong Kubernetes expertise. You have operated production clusters at scale, understand the control plane and networking model in depth, and have designed workload, upgrade, and multi-tenant strategies that others rely on.
  • Hands-on experience with a service mesh in production, ideally Istio. You are comfortable with envoy-based traffic management, mTLS, authorization policy, and mesh observability, and you can debug problems that cross the mesh boundary.
  • Fluency in Linux and containers, and in at least one scripting or systems language (Python, Go, Bash, or similar).
  • A production mindset: you think about failure modes, blast radius, cost, and observability from the start, and you have carried a pager for infrastructure you built.
  • Strong communication, debugging, and problem-solving skills, and a track record of driving major initiatives end to end across teams.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
Nice to have:
  • Experience connecting cloud services to physical devices or edge hardware in the field.
  • Familiarity with Bazel or another polyglot monorepo build system.
  • Experience with security and compliance controls (SOC 2, ISO 27001) as they apply to cloud infrastructure.
  • Experience running or contributing to a platform team that other engineers depend on as internal customers.

You do not need to match every listed expectation to apply for this position. Here at Carbon, we know that diverse perspectives foster the innovation we need to be successful, and we are committed to building a team that encompasses a variety of backgrounds, experiences, and skills.

At Carbon, we look at the person holistically and carefully consider a wide range of factors when determining salary. The compensation bracket for this position is $209,600 - $314,400 (per year). In order to maintain equitable internal pay practices, we aim to hire new employees near the midpoint of $262,000, taking into account your experience, work location, certifications, and the unique skills you bring to the role. If you are not based in our Sunnyvale or Santa Clara, CA office, the range above will be adjusted for the geographical differential associated with your actual work location.
