The Role

Pay Range:

$32.18 - $41.60

Is responsible for plumbing, pipefitting, mechanical repairs, and minor electrical work and other duties relating to maintenance necessary to keep the physical structure and associated building systems and equipment in good repair. Operates and maintains all facility-related equipment, systems, structures, etc., and is responsible for keeping the mechanical systems operating safely and at peak performance through maintenance, repairs and making the required adjustments. This position is also responsible for new installations and renovation work. The position must be available for rotating on-call and call back work when needed and may travel to outlying communities to perform work.

Key Essential Functions and Accountabilities of the Job

  • Installs, inspects, fabricates, maintains, and repairs standard plumbing systems and equipment concerned with water, gas, oil, sewage, fire control, steam and refrigeration.   Moves and installs backflow devices, water heaters and plumbing fixtures.
  • Inspects, tests and otherwise performs preventive maintenance on equipment and systems such as boilers, air handling equipment, compressors, pumps, chillers and motors.  Maintains, inspects, diagnoses and makes emergency repairs to such systems and equipment while complying with applicable building codes.  
  • Reads and interprets blueprints, maps, schematic wiring diagrams and specifications.  Prepares rough sketches of work and estimates of materials and labor for making changes in sewer, water, gas and drain lines.   Determines priorities for requisitioning materials and supplies. Leads and provides training for on specific assignments.  Performs a variety of plumbing duties including cutting and threading pipe.
  • Performs urgent corrective, routine and requisitioned repairs of the electrical, mechanical, heating, cooling and plumbing systems as required work orders.
  • Maintains routine and specialized records of all inspections, preventive maintenance and repairs performed on any equipment or system.
  • Maintains, inspects and documents all sprinkler systems throughout SEARHC facilities.
  • Purchases all parts, supplies and equipment needed for normal routine day-to-day maintenance in a cost effective manner.
  • Operates, monitors, repairs, and maintains high pressure boilers; operates fuel and water supply systems that feed boilers; checks operation of all safety features; conducts hourly pressure and temperature checks; operates feed water pumps, fuel oil pumps, and chemical pumps; measures and records temperature, pressure, steam flow, oil, water, fuel levels; maintains heating plant log; ensures proper distribution of heat to individual or groups of buildings; operates emergency generators to maintain electrical power to boiler plant in case of power failure.  Inspects and corrects oil and grease levels; repairs or replaces valves, pipes, and controls; cleans and services filters and fuel oil strainers; removes materials that did not burn from boiler; checks all boiler parts for wear; makes adjustments and minor repairs; makes recommendations and arrangements for major repairs.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • This position does not require supervisory responsibilities.

Education, Certifications, and Licenses Required:

  • High School diploma or GED – required
  • Licensed as 2nd Class Boiler Operator - required
  • License for 1st Class Boiler Operator obtained within 1 year of hire - required
  • Valid driver’s license and remain insurable under the SEARHC automobile insurance policy - required
  • Backflow prevention license - preferred

Experience Required:

  • 4 years of experience or 8000 hours of on-the-job training as journeyman - required
  • Experience with healthcare facility maintenance - preferred
  • Experience in other trades such as welding, HVAC, and electrical troubleshooting - preferred.

Knowledge of:

  • Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, methods, techniques, materials, tools, equipment, layouts and set-ups used in the area of plumbing and pipefitting
  • Extensive knowledge of fire suppression systems and boiler systems
  • Working knowledge of all pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations related to plumbing.

Skills in:

  • Troubleshooting and repair of healthcare mechanical systems
  • Mechanical system design and installation (plumbing, pipefitting, boiler operating)
  • Welding.

Ability to:

  • Independently perform all of the essential duties related to plumbing and pipefitting at the master level and with limited direction and oversight.
  • Use and maintain all of the tools, equipment and vehicles used during routine performance of duties.
  • Maintain professional growth and development through in-service training, seminars, and workshops.

Travel Required: 

Up to 50% travel expected
