We are looking for a Staff Engineer with expertise in AMO physics and product development experience in the industry. As a Staff Engineer, you’ll be part of an interdisciplinary team whose mission is to lead IonQ on its journey to build the world’s best quantum computers to solve the world’s most complex problems. In this role, you’ll lead the system design, integration, and performance characterization of IonQ’s next-generation trapped-ion quantum computers and the associated quantum networking infrastructure.

Responsibilities: 

  • Lead the design and development of quantum networking architecture to interconnect quantum computers.
  • Lead the subsystem development of trapped-ion quantum computers.
  • Define requirements and specifications for software and control systems. 
  • Measure and analyze data on the performance of a trapped ion quantum computer.
  • Mentor physicists and engineers in taking assembled hardware from the initial stages of ion trapping to coherent gate operations. 


Minimum qualifications:

  • PhD in Physics or Electrical Engineering with a specialization in AMO physics or quantum information. 
  • 5+ years post-PhD experience working in industry or national labs.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.


Preferred qualifications: 

  • 7+ years post-PhD experience working in industry or national labs.
  • Experience in quantum networking. 
  • Familiarity with quantum frequency conversion, quantum repeaters, and photonic switches. 
  • Engineering or systems engineering experience in transforming a complex physical system into a product. 
  • Proficient in developing RF trap waveforms for coherent shuttling of ions.  
  • Engineering or systems engineering experience in transforming a complex physical system into a product. 


Location:
This role is based onsite at our Bothell, WA office. 
The salary range for this position is $128,119 to $167,740.                     

Compensation will vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Posted base salary figures are subject to change as new market data becomes available. Beyond base salary, total compensation includes a variable bonus and equity component and a range of benefit options found on our career site at ionq.co/jobs.  Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided when a candidate receives an offer of employment. IonQ's HQ is located in College Park, Maryland, a quick 15-minute metro from Washington DC. We are actively building out our recently opened manufacturing and production facility in Bothell, WA (near Seattle). Depending on the position, you may be required to be near one of our offices in College Park, Seattle, or Toronto.
