Job Description

We're looking for a Staff Software Engineer to join the Embedded Software Platform team in Athens, Greece, part of Renesas' Embedded Processing group. You'll contribute in the architecture and development of the platform software - drivers, middleware, and RTOS — that runs on Renesas devices.

Responsibilities

  • Own the software architecture for embedded platform components — define interfaces, layering, and portability strategy across Renesas device families, and make the build-vs-adopt and design trade-off calls
  • Lead the technical execution of embedded software projects end to end: break down scope, identify risk early, resolve cross-team dependencies, and keep delivery on track against schedule and quality targets
  • Provide technical leadership across the team — set coding, review, and testing standards
  • Design, develop, and maintain platform software hands-on, including low-level drivers, middleware, and RTOS integration
  • Own the quality of delivered software, from architecture and design review through verification and release
  • Plan and estimate work for yourself and the project team, manage competing priorities across parallel efforts, and report status and risk to project and engineering leadership
  • Mentor and grow senior and junior engineers through design review, code review, and direct technical coaching
  • Work closely with hardware, silicon, applications, and product teams, and represent the team's technical position to internal stakeholders and customers

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in Electrical/Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field, with 10+ years of embedded software development experience in consumer electronics, automotive, medical, or a similar domain
  • Proven track record architecting embedded software platforms that shipped in volume, including ownership of designs across multiple product generations
  • Expert C programming skills and deep experience designing software for deeply embedded, resource-constrained platforms
  • Deep knowledge of 8/16/32-bit MCU architectures, including ARM Cortex-M, and of the hardware/software boundary: memory maps, interrupt and DMA architecture, clocking, and low-power design
  • Proficient with CMake and embedded cross-compilation toolchains (GCC, LLVM/Clang, or vendor compilers), and with Docker for reproducible build and test environments
  • Strong experience with CI/CD and test automation for embedded targets, including hardware-in-the-loop testing
  • Expert across the full software engineering lifecycle, including verification of deliverables against specifications and requirements
  • Fluent debugging with lab equipment and tooling: oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, protocol analyzers, multimeters, and JTAG/SWD debuggers
  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical work across a team — driving decisions to closure, aligning stakeholders, and delivering to committed dates
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical trade-offs to non-specialist and customer audiences

Nice to have

  • Multiple RTOS and OS environments — Zephyr, FreeRTOS, embedded Linux — and experience porting or abstracting across them
  • Renesas FSP (Flexible Software Package) or comparable vendor HAL/driver frameworks
  • Hard real-time and safety-critical software design — schedulability, latency and jitter analysis, deterministic behavior under load
  • Security architecture: secure boot, key storage, ARM TrustZone, cryptographic accelerators
  • Connectivity protocols e.g. Bluetooth Low Energy stacks
  • Sustained contributions to open-source projects, ideally as a maintainer or reviewer
  • AI-assisted development experience: coding agents, agentic workflows, MCP
