About the Job:


The Staff Automation Engineer is responsible for ensuring that our APIs meet our customers’ high standards of quality, performance, and reliability. This position will play a crucial role in designing, implementing, and maintaining automated systems to streamline our operations and enhance productivity. The Staff Automation Engineer will work directly with backend engineering teams, product managers and customer support engineers to ensure that our test automation solutions meet the needs of our customers and platform. A successful automation solution will empower engineers to ship quickly without fear, enabling the organization to up the tempo of releasing groundbreaking features.


About the Role:


The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:


o Lead design and implementation of test automation infrastructure and tooling for a wide range of internal and external APIs.

o Select and build out solutions for multiple test modalities, which may include integration testing, smoke testing, user acceptance testing and performance/load testing.

o Evaluate existing systems and workflows to identify areas for optimization.

o Design, develop, and implement automated solutions for repetitive tasks and manual processes.

o Conduct testing and debugging of automation solutions to ensure functionality and reliability.

o Partner with software engineers, product managers, and other stakeholders across the business to define testing strategies and identify automation needs.

o Write clean, maintainable code and scripts in languages like Python and Go.

o Develop documentation, guidelines, and best practices for testing, enabling knowledge sharing and promoting consistent adoption across teams.

o Foster a transparent engineering culture by actively participating in and promoting our open design review process, where ideas are shared, discussed, and refined collaboratively.

o Lead by example, demonstrating strong coding practices, software engineering principles, and adherence to industry standards, while providing technical guidance to other team members.

o Collaborate with Carriers Engineering and Systems teams to ensure the availability, scalability, and security of testing and automation infrastructure.

o Cultivate a positive team culture, promoting collaboration, knowledge sharing, and a focus on delivering high-quality results.

Communicate effectively across the organization in written documentation, one-on-one conversations, and technical presentations.

o Balance long-term thinking with rapidly delivering solutions to improve our system’s stability.

o Stay updated on emerging trends, tools, and best practices to continuously improve testing and automation capabilities.


About You:


o Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Software Engineering, or related field.

o 12+ years of related experience, master’s degree and 8+ years of related experience, or equivalent related work experience. 

o Demonstrated ability to lead test automation efforts through strategy, design, implementation and long-term support.

o Strong proficiency in at least one of Ruby, Python, Rust, or Go programming languages and experience with version control systems (e.g., Git).

o Deep understanding of modern software development practices and methodologies, including agile methodologies and continuous integration and deployment.

o Familiarity with observability and alerting frameworks (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana) and CI/CD tools (e.g., Jenkins, CircleCI).

o Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze complex technical challenges, identify solutions, and implement them effectively.

o Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with software engineers, product managers, support, and cross-functional teams.

o Demonstrated leadership capabilities, including driving complex projects to successful completion.

o Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
