Staff Automation Engineer J&J Vision Uppsala

We are looking for a Staff Automation Engineer to lead automation, controls, and data integration initiatives. You will design, develop, and maintain automation systems while ensuring full regulatory compliance and system reliability. You will collaborate with equipment suppliers, global and local Engineering as well as IT teams to drive technology upgrades and digital transformation projects. Our site in Uppsala is undergoing a major transformation, modernizing its production systems and automation platforms to support next-generation medical device manufacturing. Key Responsibilities
  • Lead design, programming, troubleshooting of automation systems including PLCs, HMI, and SCADA applications for manufacturing equipment.
  • Define, implement, and validate automation projects in accordance with J&J Computer System Validation methodology and GAMP 5 standards.
  • Lead automation and digitalization projects supporting the transition to electronic batch records (eBR) and integration of manufacturing systems within the SCADA environment.
  • Implement and optimize vision systems including Körber/Seidenader, Cognex VisionPro/ViDi, Mikron Shaman for automated inspection.
  • Collaborate with Manufacturing Engineers to implement automated solutions that enhance productivity, reliability, quality, and data integrity.
  • Serve as a OT Cybersecurity Lead in close collaboration with J&J IT teams.
  • Conduct structured root cause investigations for automation and software issues, applying problem-solving tools in accordance with the site’s non-conformity and CAPA processes
  • Serve as technical owner for assigned computerized systems, leading lifecycle activities such as upgrades and obsolescence mitigation.
  • Serve as subject matter expert (SME) for automation during audits, validations, and investigations.
  • Foster a culture of innovation, safety, and continuous improvement across the manufacturing organization.
Qualifications

Education

  • BSc or MSc in Electrical, Automation, Mechatronics, or Software Engineering (or related field).
Experience and Skills
  • 8+ years of experience in industrial automation and control systems within medical device or pharmaceutical manufacturing.
  • Project management expertise within the field of high-speed automation, including vision systems, multi-axis motion control, SCADA, MES, and robotics.
  • Proficiency in PLC, HMI, and SCADA systems (FactoryTalk, Rockwell, Siemens TIA Portal, Beckhoff, CodeSys, Ignition).
  • Experience with vision software such as Seidenader and/or Cognex for automated inspection.
  • Strong understanding of networked control systems, MES/eBR integration, OPC, and industrial communication protocols.
  • Computer coding (C#, Python, SQL) for automation and data integration applications.
  • Solid understanding of GAMP 5, ISO 13485, FDA 21 CFR Part 820, and data integrity requirements (21 CFR Part 11).
  • Hands-on experience with troubleshooting and optimizing automated production equipment.
  • Strong communication skills across all levels of the organization.
  • Excellent documentation, communication, and project management skills.
  • Fluency in English; Swedish is an advantage.
