Staff Technical Writer – Stryker Vocera Technical Publications
Our Stryker Vocera Technical Publications team is searching for a highly skilled and experienced Lead Technical Writer to be a key leader within the software development team. This role demands a forward-thinking individual with a strong sense of curiosity, deep technical acumen, and the ability to engage directly with emerging technologies and unfinished products. As a senior member of the team, you will drive content strategy, lead documentation initiatives, and mentor junior writers while delivering complex, high-quality technical content for multiple audiences.
Our content is detailed, technical, and extensive, designed to meet the diverse needs of our users. We author in the DITA vocabulary of XML; manage source files in a Component Content Management System (CCMS); build output as HTML Help, PDF, and Mobile Help using Jenkins-driven DITA OT transformations; and publish to a cloud-based portal (created entirely from DITA) under automation. This position is embedded within the engineering team and reports to the Senior Manager, Technical Publications.

What You Will Do
Lead documentation efforts for complex enterprise software and clinical communication solutions.
Develop and refine high-quality technical documentation, ensuring clarity, accuracy, and usability for diverse audiences, including system administrators, developers, and healthcare professionals.
Own and drive content strategy for new and evolving products, ensuring alignment with business goals and customer needs.
Mentor and coach junior writers, guiding best practices, technical writing methodologies, and tool usage.
Document the backend platform that supports Stryker-Vocera’s communication ecosystem, including workflow, messaging, telephony solutions, and integrations.
Create end-user and technical documentation for Stryker’s proprietary wireless communication devices (C1000 Minibadge, Badge, and Smartbadge), ensuring accessibility for both technical and non-technical users.
Document cloud-based solutions such as Vocera Edge and Vocera Ease, enable hospitals to enhance secure communication and collaboration.
Work closely with engineering, UX, and QA teams to refine content, gather feedback, and enhance the overall user experience.
Develop visuals, diagrams, and workflows to support complex technical concepts and enhance comprehension.
Continuously assess and improve documentation processes, tools, and automation to increase efficiency and maintain high standards.
What You Need
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Technical Writing, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
8+ years of experience in technical writing, with a proven ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and deliverables.
Deep expertise in XML-related technologies, including:
DITA XML framework for structured technical documentation
DITA markup language (ability to view, understand, and work in it)
Oxygen, Eclipse, X-Metal, or other XML editing environments
Hands-on experience with DITA component content management systems (CCMS).
Proficiency in engineering source control and build environments, such as Perforce, Jenkins, and other automation tools.
Familiarity with enterprise software, clinical healthcare systems, speech recognition, and clinical messaging technologies (HL7, XMPP, APIs, integrations).
Experience in Agile development environments, working closely with developers, reporting defects, and contributing to product design and usability discussions.
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with a sharp eye for detail and clarity.
Demonstrated ability to manage content strategy, define documentation standards, and drive content innovation.
Strong ability to create visuals, workflows, and diagrams to enhance technical documentation.
Outstanding time management and prioritization skills, with the ability to balance multiple projects in a dynamic environment.
Experience working with geographically dispersed teams, ensuring smooth collaboration and communication
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with automation and AI-driven content generation tools.
Familiarity with REST APIs and developer documentation.
Knowledge of UX writing principles and best practices.
Experience integrating documentation with DevOps processes.
Experience in Google Analytics or other analytics tools.
