How You Will Make an Impact

The Staff Accountant will support the Controller and Finance Department in preparing and maintaining financial records and accurate financial statements. Establish and maintain accounting practices to ensure accurate and reliable data necessary for business operations. Maintain accurate General Ledgers for multiple business entities. Possess a strong understanding of the accounting cycle, and accounting systems. This position will assist accounts payable, and other areas as assigned. This position reports to the Controller or designee.


RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES: This list is illustrative only and is not intended to be a comprehensive list of tasks performed by this classification. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the job.

  • Financial Record Keeping: Maintain and update financial records, including general ledger entries, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and other financial transactions.
  • Month-End Closing: Complete month-end and year-end closing processes, ensuring accurate financial statements and reports. Prepare revenue accruals, prepaid and amortization schedules, journal entries, grants coding and allocations.
  • Reconciliation: Perform bank reconciliations, account reconciliations, and resolve discrepancies.
  • Accounts Payable: Ensuring proper coding and approvals of AP batches before posting them to the general ledger. Provide occasional support to AP to process and manage accounts payable, including verifying invoices and making payments in a timely manner.
  • Expense Management: Monitor and manage expenses, ensuring they are in line with the budget, financial goals and proper coding following guidelines.
  • Tax Compliance: Prepare sales/use tax returns, 571L property statements and maintain compliance with local, state, and federal tax regulations.
  • Audit Support: Collaborate with external auditors during financial audits and provide necessary documentation and support.
  • Compliance: Ensure compliance with accounting standards, company policies, and relevant regulations.
  • Ad Hoc Projects: Contribute to special financial projects, process improvements, or other tasks as needed.
  • Perform administrative duties, responsibilities, and activities as assigned. These may be changed or modified from time to time.

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge and understanding of laws, regulations, policies, and procedures relevant to the area of employment.
  • Working knowledge of the California School Accounting Manual highly desired.
  • Working knowledge of the Fiscal Crisis & Management Assistance Team (FCMAT) Charter School Accounting and Best Practices Manual highly desired.
  • Understanding of California Standardized Account Code Structure (SACS) software and/or alternative forms.
  • Understanding California Department of Education Fiscal Crisis & Management Assistance Team (FCMAT)/Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) calculator.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Organization’s culture, business units, services, and products.
  • Strong organization and time management skills and ability to balance projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to understand, analyze, and explain mathematical rules and equations used for data analysis.
  • Ability to prioritize work, excellent organizational skills, and initiative to improve processes.
  • Ability to handle multiple competing assignments and deadlines, while being flexible and adaptable.
  • Ability to work in team environments and with multiple levels of personnel.
  • Self-sufficient, strong interpersonal skills, and focused on excellent customer service.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field is required.
  • 3 + years of professional experience as an Accountant is required.
  • Experience in project coordination, organizing, and prioritizing is a plus.
  • Knowledge of Accounting Software: MIP Fund Accounting, Microix, SACS CA Department of Education Coding Structure is a plus.
  • Proficient skills in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Ability to perform job duties with minimal supervision, dependability, high quality, and quantity required.
  • Ability to travel in the performance of job duties required.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull objects weighing up to 10 pounds.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Mental Demands: high workflow management, high project coordination, and high people engagement.
  • Finger Dexterity: primarily using the fingers to make small movements such as typing, picking up small objects, or pinching fingers together.
  • Talking: especially where one must convey detailed or important instructions or ideas accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Average Hearing: hearing average or typical conversations and receiving ordinary information.
  • Average Visual Abilities: normal acuity necessary to prepare or inspect documents and operate office equipment.
  • Frequent multi-tasking, changing of task priorities, repetitious exacting work required.
  • Prolonged period sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Working in a low to moderate noise environment with frequent deadline pressures.

Skills Required

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field
  • 3+ years of professional experience as an Accountant
  • Knowledge and understanding of laws, regulations, policies, and procedures relevant to the area of employment
  • Proficient skills in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Ability to perform job duties with minimal supervision and demonstrate dependability
