Job Description

Summary

The Staff Accountant IV performs advanced and complex accounting functions and reporting through the preparation and review of balance sheets, profit and loss statements, and other financial reports. Responsibilities include analyzing trends, costs, revenues, financial commitments, and obligations incurred to predict future revenues and expenses. Reports the organization's finances to management, and offers suggestions about resource utilization, tax strategies, and assumptions underlying budget forecasts. Assists the Accounting Manager with the preparation and review of reconciliations, journal entries, and month-end/year-end close activities. This position identifies process improvement opportunities and provides training and guidance to less experienced Accountants.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Uses Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), controls and company and departmental procedures that will prevent or reduce risk of potential misstatements or misappropriations;
  • Reconciles complex general ledger accounts;
  • Reviews financial statements, reports, journal entries and general ledger account reconciliations prepared by less experienced accountants and provides feedback;
  • Reviews, analyzes, investigates, and corrects errors and inconsistencies in financial entries, documents, and reports;
  • Prepares complex and advanced journal entries for the general ledger;
  • Prepares lender deliverables and presents to upper management;
  • Performs month-end close process and assists with the preparation of monthly reporting packages, preparation of the management financial briefings and monthly financial reviews for the Board of Directors;
  • Assists in training and mentoring less experienced accountants. Manages projects and assumes a leadership role in assigned meetings;
  • Audits contracts, orders, and vouchers, and prepares reports to substantiate individual transactions prior to settlement;
  • Maintains responsibility for key Accounting functions (i.e. cash, investments, accounts receivable, prepaids, fixed assets, internally developed software, notes receivable, notes payable, leases, deferred rent, accounts payable, customer advances, accrued expenses, income taxes, rebates, payroll, etc.);
  • Works under deadlines and quickly resolves accounting challenges that impact many of the functional areas of the company;
  • Drives positive change through the organization by identifying issues and proposing solutions, seeing the selected method for resolution through, and maintaining the solution as appropriate;
  • Proactively acts to understand internal and external needs to identify and provide solutions to non-standard tasks/queries and complex problems;
  • Interfaces effectively with audit staff;
  • Serves as a resource on GAAP and financial accounting standards and works with senior management to implement them;
  • Drives process improvement and simplification initiatives. Suggests and creates processes and procedures to make the group more streamlined and efficient. Develops and recommends enhancements to accounting methods and procedures;
  • Assists the Accounting Project Manager with tasks such as cash flow, tax filings and other ad hoc reporting needs;
  • Acts as an accounting liaison between the Company and the international subsidiaries, consultants and other professionals that support the enterprise;
  • Leads the annual budgeting and forecasting process;

Education and/or Experience

BS/BA and 7+ years’ experience or equivalent combination of education and experience, and 4 years of SME in respective areas

Computer Skills

To perform this job successfully, an individual must have evidence of strong working knowledge of Acumatica, or equivalent accounting software, and strong knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Certified Public Accountant or Certified Management Accountant designation preferred.

Other Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge, understanding, and can apply GAAP concepts and rules;
  • Knowledgeable of the accounting field's current concepts, practices, and procedures; prior experience applying GAAP concepts and rules required; General ledger proficiency required;

Work Location

This position works on-site at the San Diego Headquarters or other company location (or from a remote location with management approval based on business requirements). Must provide adequate support to internal clients; be available for regular interactions and coordination of work with other employees, colleagues, clients, or vendors; as well as be available to facilitate effective decisions through collaboration with stakeholders.

Working Hours

This is a full-time non-exempt position requiring one to be able to work overtime from time to time to get the job done. Therefore, one must have the ability to work nights, weekends or on holidays as required. This may be changed at any time to meet the needs of the business. The typical working hours for this position are Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 5:00pm.

This position requires no travel; however, attendance may be required at various local conferences and meetings.
