About the Role
Innovatus Technology Consulting is seeking an experienced Senior Systems Engineer to join our team in San Diego. In this role, you will design, implement, secure, and optimize enterprise Microsoft 365 and Azure environments in support of our government and commercial clients. You will serve as a technical lead and subject-matter expert, delivering reliable, secure, and scalable cloud and collaboration solutions while mentoring junior engineers and collaborating closely with project managers, security teams, and client stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
- Architect, deploy, configure, and maintain Microsoft 365 services (Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, Teams, OneDrive, Intune, Entra ID/Azure AD, Defender for Office 365, and related workloads).
- Design, implement, and manage Azure infrastructure and platform services, including virtual machines, networking (VNets, NSGs, VPN/ExpressRoute), storage, Azure Virtual Desktop, Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, and identity solutions.
- Lead migrations, hybrid identity configurations (Azure AD Connect / Cloud Sync), and modernization efforts from on-premises Active Directory and Exchange to cloud-first or hybrid environments.
- Develop and enforce security baselines, conditional access policies, compliance configurations, and Zero Trust principles across M365 and Azure.
- Automate administration and reporting using PowerShell, Microsoft Graph, Azure CLI/Bicep/ARM templates, and Infrastructure-as-Code practices.
- Troubleshoot complex issues related to identity, messaging, collaboration, endpoint management, and cloud infrastructure; provide root-cause analysis and permanent resolutions.
- Create and maintain technical documentation, architecture diagrams, runbooks, and standard operating procedures.
- Mentor junior engineers, participate in knowledge-sharing, and contribute to internal best practices and reusable solution accelerators.
- Collaborate with cybersecurity teams to support audits, continuous monitoring, and compliance requirements (e.g., NIST, DoD, CMMC where applicable).
- Engage with clients to gather requirements, present technical solutions, and ensure successful project delivery.
- Active U.S. Secret security clearance or higher (required).
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 10+ years of progressive experience in systems engineering, with at least 6–7 years focused on Microsoft 365 and Azure in enterprise environments.
- Deep expertise in Microsoft 365 administration, security, and collaboration services.
- Strong hands-on experience with Azure IaaS, PaaS, networking, identity (Entra ID), and monitoring/security services.
- Proven experience with hybrid identity, directory synchronization, and cloud migrations.
- Advanced PowerShell scripting skills and familiarity with automation/Infrastructure-as-Code tools.
- Solid understanding of enterprise networking, Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, and certificate services.
- Excellent troubleshooting, analytical, and documentation skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with technical teams and non-technical stakeholders.
- Ability to work on-site in the San Diego area as required and support occasional after-hours or on-call needs.
- Microsoft certifications such as AZ-104, AZ-305, MS-102, SC-300, SC-400, or equivalent.
- Experience supporting Department of Defense or other federal clients, including familiarity with DISA STIGs, FedRAMP, or related frameworks.
- Experience with Azure Virtual Desktop, Intune endpoint management, or Microsoft Defender suite.
- Knowledge of Terraform, Bicep, or other IaC tools in Azure environments.
- Prior consulting or professional services experience.
