A Sr. System Engineer is a highly skilled systems engineer with expert knowledge in multiple operating systems, software systems or system technologies. They work with a high degree of independence to develop or lead the development or implementation of systems. As they strive to ensure the quality and performance of the O’Reilly systems, Sr. engineers are focused on the consistent application of system management best practices, system security and the process and procedures surrounding the implementation and support of computing systems.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Stays current with new and emerging technology, security threats and standards as it relates to the needs of the company
Trains and guides administrators on proper code configuration and implementation of new software systems
Works with System Architects and management to help shape system and security standards and implement best practices
Takes leadership role in guiding projects through the complete implementation life cycle
Typical focus is on system design efforts and ensuring systems are implemented in a consistent, secure and efficient manner
Responsible (takes ownership) for multiple systems
Manage tasks and resources while utilizing modern project management principles
Leads the development of multiple projects at one time
Conducts security and system performance reviews and ensures best practices are being followed
Reviews overall security of systems to determine state of regulatory compliance (PCI, Sox, etc)
Reviews requirements and state of license compliance of systems
Recommend system improvements and changes to systems, as needed
Perform analysis of systems, hardware or software to uncover issues and solve complicated problems that typically span multiple systems
Lead various meetings to gather system requirements and project details
Conduct system demos to educate and train others in the use of system
Create or update advanced project documentation
Test systems to validate proper functionality and performance
SKILLS/EDUCATION/KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE/ABILITIES
Required:
6 + years of server administration experience
Understands how to establish the value and cost of an IT project
Advanced understanding of multiple server operating systems supported by department
Ability to lead and get results from others
Ability to articulate advanced technical concepts and teach others
Ability to effectively multitask
Expert software debugging and testing knowledge
Expert knowledge of complex computer systems (multiple programs, databases, communications etc)
Expert knowledge of system services, database systems, and systems analysis and design
Ability to write advanced technical documentation
Expert problem-solving skills
Good verbal and written communications skills
Must work well in a team environment
Ability to learn independently
Willingness to work flexible schedule including nights/weekends
High School diploma or equivalent
Desired:
A bachelors of science in a technology related field
Experience with scripting and automation tools used in server environments
Excellent verbal skills
Advanced education in leadership and teambuilding
Advanced skills in Project Management and Business Analysis
Advanced technical training or certifications related to scope of work
Ability to motivate and inspire others
