Position Summary
As a Senior Software Engineer within UnitedHealthcare Employer & Individual, you will design, build, and deploy high-performance software applications and enterprise AI-powered solutions that simplify the healthcare experience for millions of members. Working within a collaborative engineering environment, you will drive technical design, write scalable code, and leverage cutting-edge tools to automate complex workflows and modernize health benefit systems. This role offers the opportunity to solve critical engineering challenges, evaluate emerging technology trends, and deliver impactful digital solutions at enterprise scale.
Primary Responsibilities
- Design, develop, deploy, and maintain scalable software applications and AI-powered solutions to address complex business challenges with an emphasis on responsible use of AI.
- Leverage enterprise-approved AI tools and modern engineering practices to streamline workflows, automate tasks, and drive continuous improvement.
- Evaluate emerging trends and technologies to inform solution design, architecture, and strategic innovation.
- Collaborate with cross-functional product, engineering, and data teams to define software requirements and technical specifications.
- Write clean, maintainable, performant code and participate in code reviews, design reviews, and architectural discussions.
- Troubleshoot, debug, and optimize application performance, cloud services, and integration pipelines in production environments.
- Mentor junior and mid-level software engineers, fostering technical growth and modern software development practices across the team

Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, 4+ years of equivalent professional software engineering experience in Lieu of Degree
- 5+ years of professional software development experience designing, building, and deploying enterprise-grade applications
- 3+ years of experience with one or more modern programming languages (e.g., Python, Java, C#, or TypeScript)
- 2+ years of experience working in an Agile/Scrum engineering environment
- 1+ years of experience building, integrating, and deploying AI-powered features, automated workflows, or machine learning services/APIs
- 1+ years of experience with DevOps automation, containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, GitHub Actions, GitLab)
- 1+ years of experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, or GCP) and microservices application architecture
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced degree (Master's) in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, or related technical field
- Experience integrating Large Language Models (LLMs), natural language processing (NLP), or vector databases into software applications
- Understanding of enterprise AI ethics, safety guidelines, and data governance practices
- Experience with healthcare data systems, health benefits operations, or security/privacy standards (e.g., HIPAA)

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). No matter where or when you begin a career with us, you'll find a far-reaching choice of benefits and incentives. The salary for this role will range from $91,700 to $163,700 annually based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
