Job Title: Senior Software Engineer – AI Platform (Michelangelo Feature Store)
About the Team The Michelangelo team builds and maintains the core Machine Learning platform that scales AI solutions across the enterprise. Within Michelangelo, the Feature Store team is responsible for the critical infrastructure that bridges data and real-time machine learning predictions. We build the high-performance feature serving layer that enables product teams and data scientists to deploy production-grade AI seamlessly, ensuring production systems have access to the right signals at exactly the right time.
Role Overview As a Senior Software Engineer on the Michelangelo Feature Store team, you will drive the technical direction of our real-time feature serving infrastructure. You will be responsible for tackling complex distributed systems challenges to deliver high-throughput, ultra-low-latency feature retrieval at enterprise scale. This role requires a blend of hands-on technical execution, architectural system design, and engineering mentorship.
What You Will Do
- Design & Build: Own the architecture and implementation of highly scalable feature serving components, ensuring millisecond-latency feature retrieval for real-time ML applications.
- Scale Infrastructure: Develop robust streaming and online data serving systems that handle massive concurrent request volumes, ensuring high availability, fault tolerance, and graceful degradation under load.
- System Performance: Optimize platform efficiency by tuning underlying fast-access data stores and in-memory caches to guarantee strict low-latency SLAs.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner closely with ML engineers, data scientists, and product teams to translate feature engineering needs into generalized platform capabilities and elegant, developer-facing APIs.
- Technical Leadership: Lead technical design reviews, establish coding standards, and guide architectural decisions to minimize technical debt across the feature serving stack.
- Mentorship: Elevate the engineering bar by mentoring mid-level and junior engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence and continuous learning.
- Operational Excellence: Own the production health of the feature serving layer. Define SLIs/SLOs, build comprehensive observability (metrics, distributed tracing), and participate in on-call rotations to ensure 99.99%+ reliability.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s, Master's, or PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
- 5+ years of professional software engineering experience building and operating large-scale backend systems in production.
- Proficiency in one or more backend programming languages such as Go, Java, C++, or Python.
- Strong fundamentals in distributed systems, covering concurrency, consistency, data modeling, API design, and fault tolerance.
- Proven track record of leading the design and end-to-end delivery of complex, high-throughput, low-latency software services.
Preferred Qualifications
- Deep understanding of fast-access NoSQL databases, in-memory caches, and key-value stores (e.g., Redis, Cassandra, DynamoDB) optimized for read-heavy workloads.
- Experience with real-time stream processing and event-driven architectures (e.g., Kafka, Flink).
- Background in building or scaling Feature Stores (e.g., Feast, Tecton) or similar high-performance data serving layers.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience writing comprehensive technical design documents.
Responsibilities
For Sunnyvale, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD $202,000 per year - USD $224,000 per year.
