An organization within Northrop Grumman’s Payload and Ground Systems (PGS) division, Mission Enabling Products is a leading designer, producer, and supplier of spacecraft components that power and enable satellites of all classes. Products include spacecraft panels, bus structures, precision optical structures, deployable structural systems and mechanisms, solar arrays, and antenna reflectors. Our products are on virtually every U.S. satellite built in the last 20 years.
The Northrop Grumman Mission Enabling Products Business Unit’s team in Beltsville, MD is seeking a Senior Principal Structural Analyst to perform, structural analysis, design, and/or test of one or more moderately complex or portions of complex materials, structural components, and functional systems of company products. This position is onsite, currently located in Beltsville, MD and in approximately a year relocating to Hanover, MD.
Job Summary:
Highly motivated structural analysis engineer for structures, structural assemblies, thermal systems and their components to join the Integrated Thermal Systems Operating Unit’s team with the following responsibilities:
- Assess structural integrity of metallic and composite structures using traditional closed form solutions, as well as finite element analysis (FEA).
- Interact with design and development teams (teams include specialists in Design, Quality, Materials, Manufacturing, and Test) to create and verify creative design solutions that meet all requirements (technical, cost, schedule).
- Types of analysis includes: Quasi-Static, Dynamic, Acoustic, Buckling, Combined Load Cases, Flexible Stiffness, Modal, Pressure, Random Vibration, Relative Deformation, Sine Vibration, Thermal Analysis - FEM based, Static, Fatigue, Shock, Venting, Lap Bond, Bolted Joint, Tooling.
- Tasks include: Engineering Design Control, Finite Element Reporting Results, Daily Management, Baseline Control, Strength Code, Edge Bond Code, 2D & 3D Finite Element Models Generation, Finite Element Model Checks, Material Properties & Allowables Definitions.
- Support development of flight hardware from preliminary through detailed design, drawing release, manufacturing, integration, verification testing, and transportation.
- Reduce material characterization test data into analysis input properties and material capability properties.
- Prepare and make presentations summarizing structural assessment results for internal review boards and external customer design reviews.
- Mentor junior engineers in analysis work and review and review and approve their analysis results.
- Lead a small team, including task and schedule planning, to meet major project milestone objectives.
Basic Qualifications: Level 4
Bachelor’s Degree in STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering, Math or related area (Degrees in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering highly preferred) and 9+ years of direct experience are required. With a STEM field Master’s degree, 7+ years of direct experience are required. With a STEM field PhD, 4 + years of direct experience are required.
Basic Qualifications: Level 3
Bachelor’s Degree in STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering, Math or related area (Degrees in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering highly preferred) and 5+ years of direct experience are required. With a STEM field Master’s degree, 3+ years of direct experience are required. With a STEM field PhD, 0 + years of direct experience are required.
- Proficiency in structural analysis of aerospace structures containing metals, sandwich panels, composite materials, plastics, and bonded joints.
- Proficiency in finite element analysis and dynamics.
- Proficiency with a FEM mesh creator, FEMAP, and NX Nastran.
- Experience leading dynamic tests, analyzing the results, and documenting them.
- Experience in reporting technical results to those without technical experience.
- Excellent oral and written communication, computer, documentation, and presentation skills.
- Ability to work in a fast paced dynamic environment as part of a multi-discipline team providing consistently accurate results.
- Must be a self-starter and possess strong interpersonal and leadership skills with the ability to work both independently or as part of a team.
- Ability to make sound decisions.
- Must be detail oriented but able to understand the big picture.
- Ability to multi-task.
- Ability to prioritize and manage time effectively.
Preferred Qualifications:
- MS in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering.
- Proficiency in ESI VA One, Altair Hyperworks, NX, Matlab, Python, PDMLink, and Visual Basic.
- Constitutive model development and implementation.
- Previous experience in aerospace manufacturing facility.
- Knowledge of composite materials manufacturing processes.
- Knowledge of composite materials application for extreme environments.
- Experience with Visual Basic, Creo.
- Ability to receive a security clearance.
Salary Range: $133,000.00 - $199,600.00Salary Range 2: $107,300.00 - $160,900.00
The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.The application period for the job is estimated to be 20 days from the job posting date.
