Position Overview

The Senior Physiotherapist will lead and coordinate comprehensive rehabilitation services for persons with disabilities through a community-based approach. The role includes assessment, therapy planning, direct service delivery, mentoring community rehabilitation workers (CRWs) and junior physiotherapists, and creating a road map / protocols to ensure effective and quality rehabilitation services at community and institution level.


Key Responsibilities

1. Clinical Assessment & Intervention

  • Conduct detailed physiotherapy assessments for children and adults with disabilities (orthopaedic, neurological, developmental, etc.).
  • Develop individualised rehabilitation plans (IRP) with clear goals, timelines, and home-based exercise plans.
  • Provide therapeutic interventions (exercise therapy, neuro-developmental techniques, postural management, gait training, pain management, etc.).
  • Prescribe and guide on mobility aids and assistive devices (wheelchairs, walkers, calipers, orthoses, etc.).
  • Monitor progress regularly and revise treatment plans based on outcomes.

2. Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR) & Outreach

  • Plan and implement community-based rehabilitation services in coordination with field teams.
  • Conduct community screening camps for early identification of persons with disabilities.
  • Provide home-based therapy guidelines and demonstrate exercises to caregivers and family members.
  • Ensure follow-up of beneficiaries at community level through CRWs and local volunteers.
  • Promote inclusion of persons with disabilities in Anganwadi centres, schools, and community activities (if relevant to your program).

 

 

3. Road Map / Protocols for Physiotherapists & CRWs

  • Develop a practical road map for physiotherapists and community rehab workers to deliver effective services, including:
    • Standard assessment formats and checklists
    • Simple treatment protocols for common conditions
    • Home exercise charts and visual aids
    • Referral pathways (from community to centre and higher facilities)
    • Follow-up and documentation formats
  • Provide on-the-job guidance to ensure the road map is followed uniformly across locations.

4. Capacity Building & Mentoring

  • Train and mentor community rehabilitation workers, physiotherapy assistants, and junior physiotherapists on:
    • Basic assessment skills
    • Safe handling, positioning, and exercises
    • Use and maintenance of mobility aids
    • Disability rights, protection, and inclusion
  • Conduct regular training sessions, refresher trainings, and case discussions for the rehab team.

5. Coordination & Networking

  • Coordinate with medical professionals, occupational therapists, speech therapists, psychologists, social workers, and other team members for multidisciplinary care.
  • Liaise with government departments, hospitals, primary health centres, Anganwadi centres, schools, and NGOs for referrals and support services.
  • Participate in review meetings, planning meetings, and case conferences at project and organisational level.

6. Documentation, Reporting & Monitoring

  • Maintain accurate clinical records, assessment reports, progress notes, and assistive device records.
  • Support the team in maintaining beneficiary databases and outcome tracking tools.
  • Prepare monthly/quarterly reports highlighting achievements, challenges, case studies, and best practices.
  • Contribute to project reviews, evaluations, and donor reports whenever required.

 

7. Quality, Safeguarding & Inclusion

  • Ensure all services uphold dignity, safety, and rights of persons with disabilities.
  • Follow organisation’s safeguarding, child protection, and ethical guidelines.
  • Promote gender-sensitive and inclusive practices in all rehabilitation activities.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s/Master’s in Physiotherapy (BPT/MPT) from a recognised institution.
  • Minimum 5–7 years of clinical experience, with at least 2–3 years in community-based rehabilitation or disability sector preferred.
  • Experience in training and supervising field staff/CRWs will be an added advantage.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong clinical physiotherapy skills in neuro, musculoskeletal, and paediatric conditions.
  • Understanding of community-based rehabilitation (CBR) concepts and rights-based approach.
  • Ability to train, mentor and guide junior staff and community workers.
  • Good communication skills in English and local language.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Basic computer skills (MS Office, data entry, documentation).
  • Willingness to travel regularly to field areas and communities.

Key Deliverables

  • Functional road map/protocol document for physiotherapists and CRWs.
  • Regular capacity-building sessions conducted and documented.
  • Improved functional outcomes for persons with disabilities as per individual plans.
  • Timely and accurate reports and documentation shared with management/donors.
