SMX is seeking a Senior Network Engineer who will be responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining robust network infrastructure to support our client’s data capabilities and operations. This role involves optimizing network performance, ensuring security compliance, and troubleshooting complex network issues while collaborating with cross-functional teams. The ideal candidate will possess strong technical expertise in network systems, security protocols, and firewall administration, with the ability to develop innovative solutions that enhance network resilience and efficiency. Additional responsibilities include creating comprehensive documentation, providing technical support to staff, and mentoring junior team members to foster professional development within the IT department.
This is a full-time onsite position in Ft. Belvoir, VA.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Design, install, and configure network systems to support DCD data capabilities in both cloud and traditional networking environments.
- Develop and implement new network solutions and improve the resilience of the current environment.
- Monitor network performance, troubleshoot outages, and schedule upgrades to maximize performance.
- Collaborate with network architects on network optimization and capacity management.
- Establish and enforce network security policies and procedures.
- Support and administer firewall environments in line with IT security policies.
- Provide technical support to staff and troubleshoot network-related issues.
- Create and maintain comprehensive documentation for network infrastructure.
- Lead and mentor junior network engineers, as applicable.
Required Skills, Experience & Education
- Active TS security clearance and eligible for SCI and NATO read-on prior to starting work.
- Security+ or comparable DODD 8140-compliant certification is required.
- Professional certifications such as Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) or CompTIA Network+ are required. Certifications such as Cisco Certified Network Professional or above and/or AWS Certified Advanced Networking are preferred.
- Proven experience in network engineering, with a focus on designing and implementing complex network infrastructure.
- In-depth knowledge of routing protocols such as OSPF and BGP.
- Extensive experience with network hardware and software from vendors like Cisco and Juniper.
- Strong understanding of network security principles and best practices.
- Proficiency in network monitoring and diagnostic tools like Wireshark and SolarWinds.
- Familiarity with cloud networking concepts and technologies (AWS, Azure).
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, or a related field.
- A minimum of 7+ years of experience in network engineering, with at least 3 years in a senior or lead role.
- Demonstrated experience with large-scale network design and implementation.
- Experience in a data-centric or high-availability environment is a strong plus.
