The Role
Develops next-generation thermal management and cooling systems for high-density data centers. Responsibilities include advanced mechanical design, engineering calculations, CFD and 1D modeling, prototyping, proof-of-concept testing, design validation, technology scouting, and cross-functional collaboration. The role addresses complex thermal architectures involving heat transfer, fluid mechanics, refrigeration, liquid cooling, manufacturability, energy efficiency, and cost.
Summary Generated by Built In

The Sr. Mechanical Engineer will contribute to the development of new products; work in a cross-functional development or advanced development group; manage a variety of tasks and activities in this dynamic environment; and solve complex problems where no precedence exists.

Vertiv's Thermal Business Unit is a global leader in designing, manufacturing, and servicing mission-critical thermal management solutions for data centers, communication networks, and commercial and industrial facilities worldwide. The Thermal BU's portfolio spans the complete thermal chain from chip to atmosphere, including room cooling, in-row cooling, rack cooling, direct-to-chip liquid cooling, coolant distribution units (CDUs), rear-door heat exchangers, chillers, dry coolers, and trim coolers. Operating across all major regions (Americas, EMEA, and Asia-Pacific), the Thermal BU serves hyperscale, colocation, enterprise, and edge data center customers with solutions optimized for increasingly high-density AI and high-performance computing environments. Within this business unit, the Advanced Development group is responsible for incubating next-generation thermal technologies and proving their viability before transitioning them to NPDI teams for productization. This role sits at the forefront of that mission, driving innovation in emerging thermal architectures that will define Vertiv's competitive position in the rapidly evolving data center cooling market.

Roles and Responsibilties:

  • Conduct advanced development tasks to inform NPDI teams designing new cooling systems for high density computer rooms.
  • Collaborate across the disciplines of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, process engineering, as well as production and offering teams. Work with these teams for design reviews, meeting cost metrics, and brainstorming around customer pain points.
  • Perform a variety of engineering calculations using traditional engineering methods to verify design requirements, which may include stress calculations, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics.
  • Perform CFD and/or 1D modeling and analysis to evaluate and optimize cooling system architectures, balancing thermal performance, energy efficiency, physical footprint, manufacturability, and total system cost.
  • Develop solutions to complex problems where little or no precedence exists - the use of ingenuity and creativity is regularly required.
  • Develop prototypes to support advanced product design.
  • Plan and oversee proof-of-concept testing, then utilize the results to validate or modify designs, control methods, and analytical models.
  • Compile reports and design guidelines.
  • Scout technologies that could be implemented into Vertiv cooling systems. Sources could be suppliers, university researchers, startup companies, etc.
  • Support Vertiv activities with University-Industry collaborations.
  • Interact with employees, outside vendors and suppliers as needed.
  • Other Duties as assigned

Education and Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) or directly related degree at minimum.
  • Advanced Degree preferred.
  • Min 7-10 years of experience.
  • Demonstrated record of meeting deadlines and project goals
  • Understanding of electrical schematic and pneumatic drawings (P&ID)
  • Understanding of thermodynamics and fluid mechanics
  • Ability to work and multi-task in a fast-paced environment independently and/or as a member of a dynamic team; offer and receive constructive criticism.
  • Demonstrated history of delivering quality products to market with understanding and respect for phases of the product development process
  • Excellent project management skills and communication skills
  • Experience with 3D CAD software, preferred CREO 4.0 and greater
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Ability to travel upto 10%
  • Preferred:
    • Experience in programming and/or creating thermal system energy models to compare new ideas to baseline systems
    • Experienced in the use of AI-powered engineering tools for increased efficiency
    • Experience with 2-Phase heat transfer fluids, including “natural” refrigerants
    • Experience with 1-phase and/or 2-phase Liquid Cooling technologies
    • Knowledge of psychometric chart and refrigeration cycles
    • Experience with CFD and/or FEA software, preferred Ansys
    • Understanding of manufacturing limitations, break sheet metal and formed copper tubes
