The Stability Engineer will perform reliability analysis in support of the development of the New Services Requests in the PJM Interconnection Process.  The PJM Interconnection Process involves the study of various types of New Services requests which are submitted by Project Developers and Eligible Customers.  The proposed interconnections are evaluated by the Interconnection Planning Analysis (IPA) group for compliance with NERC and RFC standards as well as PJM and Transmission Owner planning principles. The Engineer will also engage in a variety of other adequacy and reliability assessments that support the planning function and the main goals and objectives of the IPA department.

Essential Functions:

  • Perform power system analysis and dynamic stability analysis required in the development of System Impact Study reports for New Service Requests.

  • Evaluate transmission system reinforcements required to resolve reliability issues on the transmission system identified through analysis.

  • Work with Transmission Owner staff in the development and refinement of the required reinforcements necessary to maintain the reliability of the transmission system.

  • Support data reviews for New Service Requests prior to inclusion in base case model for analysis.

  • Support the creation and maintenance of power flow and dynamics cases and individual project models used for analysis by IPA.

  • Manage multiple projects and coordinate with PJM contractors to delegate, prioritize and review the work performed by them

  • Prepare technical reports and/or presentations of analyses performed, conclusions and recommendations

  • Support PJM business practice manual development, updates and communication to stakeholders.

  • Identify, coordinate and assist with the development of new and innovative methods in the planning process.

  • Work with other members of the System Planning Division to solve complex engineering problems and to resolve process coordination issues.

  • Represent PJM on industry committees, task forces, or stakeholder groups involving issues related to planning and engineering.

Characteristics & Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering

  • At least 4 years of applicable work experience in power systems.

  • Knowledge and experience with power system software such as PSSE, TARA and PSCAD to perform dynamic studies of interconnection power systems.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and written and verbal communication skills.

  • Familiar with applicable NERC and IEEE standards

  • Ability to produce high-quality work products with attention to detail

  • Experience in quantitative and qualitative analysis

  • Ability to use mathematical and electrical theory

  • Ability to troubleshoot and provide technical support

  • Experience using effective verbal and written communications skills

  • Ability to visualize and solve complex problems

Preferred:

  • Master's Degree in Engineering

  • Experience working with PSSE (library and user written) and PSCAD models for synchronous and inverter based generation, power electronic devices, HVDC, FACTs, etc.

  • Hands on experience with programming tools such as Python, FORTRAN, etc. to develop/enhance automation scripts

  • Experience with PJM operations, markets, and planning functions

  • Experience using PSS/e (power system analysis program)
