Laurel is on a mission to return time. As the leading AI Time platform for professional services firms, we’re transforming how organizations capture, analyze, and optimize their most valuable resource: time. Our proprietary machine learning technology automates work time capture and connects time data to business outcomes, enabling firms to increase profitability, improve client delivery, and make data-driven strategic decisions. We serve many of the world's largest accounting and law firms, including EY, Aprio, Crowell & Moring, and Frost Brown Todd, and process over 1 billion work activities annually that have never been collected and aggregated before Laurel’s AI Time platform.

Our team comprises top talent in AI, product development, and engineering—innovative, humble, and forward-thinking professionals committed to redefining productivity in the knowledge economy. We're building solutions that empower workers to deliver twice the value in half the time, giving people more time to be creative and impactful. If you're passionate about transforming how people work and building a lasting company that explores the essence of time itself, we'd love to meet you.

About the Role

We are looking for an exceptional Senior Full-Stack Engineer to join our Product & Engineering org. You’ll build scalable, reliable software across our stack, from native telemetry and cloud services to the user-facing products that automate professionals’ timekeeping. As a Senior Engineer, you will own complex work end to end, raise the bar for the engineers around you, and work on a charter to solve high-level business challenges with a collaborative, cross-functional team. Your curiosity will serve you well in asking the right questions to understand the customer problems we’re solving, and your ability to learn quickly and design quality software will let you deliver value to our customers incrementally. Ownership comes from the ground up — we empower our teams to understand and make an impact on the business.

This role is not tied to a single team. During the interview process we’ll get to know your strengths and interests and consider you across any of our Product & Engineering teams (DFP - Digital Foot Print, Signal, Timekeeping, and Enterprise to find the best mutual fit.

Why Now?

AI will fundamentally change the nature of work, and how we think about work. As a Senior Full-Stack Engineer at Laurel, you’ll have the capacity to understand and impact the experiences of our customers, standing at the forefront of the mission to return time to our customers. Laurel is at a pivot point: we’ve built a product that people like, and have a direction that people love, but it hasn’t been done yet.

Teams You Could Join

We hire full-stack engineers into the org broadly and match you to a team based on fit. A quick look at where you might land:

  • DFP (Digital Footprint): Builds the desktop and mobile native telemetry and enterprise third-party integrations that automatically capture how professionals work — the digital footprint that powers Laurel’s automated timekeeping.

  • Signal: Turns captured activity into meaningful signal — the intelligence layer that transforms raw work data into accurate, usable time entries and insights.

  • Timekeeping: Owns the main user-facing timekeeping experience across web, mobile, and the desktop companion app, where professionals review and create their timesheets. This is our core user persona.

  • Enterprise: Builds for admins and other enterprise personas — the configuration, administration, and enterprise-grade capabilities that the world’s largest firms rely on.

Core Duties

  • Architect and Develop: Design, build, and maintain efficient, reusable, and extremely reliable code across the full stack — from native and cloud services to user-facing product.

  • Own End to End: Take responsibility for complex features and product areas from spec through delivery, alerting, and monitoring — building in quality and security from the start.

  • Collaborate: Work closely with cross-functional teams — product managers, designers, and other engineers — to gather requirements, define technical specifications and measures of success, and deliver high-quality software.

  • Optimize: Identify bottlenecks and bugs and devise solutions to mitigate and address them. Continuously improve the performance, scalability, and security of our applications.

  • Mentor: Provide technical guidance and mentorship to more junior engineers, fostering a culture of learning and growth.

  • Test and Deploy: Implement automated testing and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines to ensure robust, reliable releases.

  • Connect: Engage with our product and our users. Your input and opinion will be highly valued — we expect you to have many thoughts on how things should be done and why.

  • Participate in an on-call rotation, with a detail-oriented approach and a bias towards action.

Teammates

This role reports into our Product & Engineering leadership and works alongside engineers, product managers, and designers across our teams.

Skills and Experience

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

  • Experience: 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, with full-stack range across front end and back end. Ideal candidates have a solid understanding of modern web technologies and are comfortable working with large-scale data systems.

  • Technical Skills: We expect deep knowledge of, and strongly-held opinions about, some of the technologies below (or similar). We want to hear your thoughts on best practices, patterns, code smells, and ways to improve performance — what would you teach our other engineers, and what has bitten you in the past?

    • Required: Strong understanding of TypeScript / JavaScript, Node.js, messaging queues (e.g., AWS SQS), and MongoDB.

    • Nice to have: React and front-end frameworks; Python (Django, FastAPI, or Flask); Airflow; PostgreSQL; NestJS; native desktop development (e.g., .NET on Windows); mobile app development; or experience working with ML teams.

  • Problem-Solving: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to think critically and creatively and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

  • Communication: Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.

  • Customer Mindset: Proven ability to engage with customers and understand their needs.

  • Domain Knowledge: Experience in AI is preferred.

Flexibility and Logistics

  • Location: Hybrid in Los Angeles / San Francisco / New York, working Tuesday – Thursday in office. We will hire remote in the US / Canada for extraordinary candidates.

  • Compensation: Competitive salary, generous equity, comprehensive medical/dental/vision coverage with covered premiums, 401(k), and additional benefits including wellness/commuter/FSA stipends.

  • What happens if my kid or I are sick on a workday? Take all the time you need! We’ll cover for you. And send you some soup.

Why join Laurel:
  • To date, we've secured significant funding from renowned venture capitalists (Google Ventures, IVP, Anthos, Upfront Ventures), as well as notable individuals like Marc Benioff, Gokul Rajaram, Kevin Weil, and Alexis Ohanian

  • A smart, fun, collaborative, and inclusive team

  • Great employee benefits, including equity and 401K

  • Bi-annual, in-person company off-sites, in unique locations, to grow and share time with the team

  • An opportunity to perform at your best while growing, making a meaningful impact on the company's trajectory, and embodying our core values: understanding your "why," dancing in the rain, being your whole self, and sanctifying time

We encourage diverse perspectives and rigorous thinkers who aren't afraid to challenge the status quo. Laurel is an equal opportunity employer. All applicants will be considered for employment without attention to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, veteran or disability status. We are not able to support visa sponsorship or relocation assistance.

If you think you'd be a good fit for this role, we encourage you to apply, even if you don’t perfectly match all the bullet points in the job description. At Laurel, we strive to create an inclusive culture that encourages people from all walks of life to bring their unique, diverse perspectives to work.
