The Role
Lead electrical power engineering for steam and gas generating stations: perform load flow, short circuit, relay coordination, arc flash, and equipment sizing analyses; develop one-line diagrams and models; write scoping and purchase specifications; manage projects (budget, schedule, vendors) from concept through commissioning; ensure NERC/NPCC/NYSRC compliance and coordinate with operations and vendors for safe, code-compliant solutions.
Summary Generated by Built In

The Senior Engineer, under general guidance, directs or performs electrical power engineering assignments of major size or complexity and makes independent decisions on engineering problems and methods. This is a power engineering role requiring deep expertise in electrical power systems analysis, equipment specification, and generating station design. The Senior Engineer performs load flow studies, short circuit analyses, protective relay coordination, cable and equipment sizing calculations, and power quality assessments for the companys steam and gas generating stations. The role demands thorough knowledge of generator ratings, transformer applications, switchgear, protective relaying, grounding systems, and their relationship to NERC, NPCC, and NYSRC reliability requirements.

Beyond technical analysis, this role carries full project engineering responsibility: managing budgets, schedules, scoping documents, vendor relationships, and purchase specifications from conception through commissioning. The Senior Engineer coordinates closely with Steam & Gas Engineering working groups, plant operations personnel, and external vendors to deliver safe, reliable, and code-compliant solutions. This position demands a proactive engineer who takes ownership, surfaces issues and ambiguity early, upholds design basis discipline, and is comfortable working in active power generation plant environments.

This position does not provide employment pursuant to the terms of a STEM OPT Training Plan.

What We Do

We provide power to more than 10 million people and businesses across NYC and Westchester. Reliability and accessibility are central to what we do and how we provide energy service. Leading the industry to power tomorrow is our other focus- we are committed to aggressively transitioning away from fossil fuels to a net-zero economy by 2050. To help achieve this we collaborate with customers, regulators, policymakers, engineers, and other stakeholders to ensure our clean energy future is informed by principles of affordability, equity, and environmental justice. We’re also heavily investing in new technologies and the infrastructure that can get us there. What are a few things we have achieved so far? • Since 2009, our energy efficiency programs have prevented 11 million metric tons of carbon emissions – the same amount it would take to power 1.4 million homes for a year • We’re currently the second largest producer of solar energy in North America • Recently, we’ve embarked on an 8-year project to make our systems more resilient in the face of extreme weather events
